By James North – On tonight's show: David Chaytor, the first MP jailed over the parliamentary expenses scandal, has been released from prison after serving just a quarter of his 18-month sentence. Mr Chaytor falsely claimed more than £22,000 of taxpayers' money.
Four Muslim men stand trial after launching an horrific attack on an RE teacher, simply because they did not approve of his teaching religious studies to Muslim girls. The men were said to have attempted the assault several times, ‘lying in wait’ for Mr Smith before successfully ambushing him on his way to work on 12 July last year.
A 16-year-old schoolboy has become the youngest British mountaineer to climb Everest. George Atkinson reached the 29,029ft peak at 2 a.m., also making him the youngest climber in the world to have scaled the tallest mountain on every continent.
In European news, MEPs have called for a 5% increase to the EU’s next multi-annual budget which is expected to run from 2014–2020. MEPs also called for all rebates on member states' contributions to the EU budget to be scrapped and an EU tax to fund the EU budget.
Also Greece’s EU Commissioner admits that Greece will have to exit the eurozone if national parties fail to agree on further austerity measures. A Greek government spokesman said that the idea of calling a referendum on a new set of austerity measures is not off the table.
In world news, Former Yugoslav general and war hero Ratko Mladic has been arrested in Serbia today. He has been accused of war crimes during the 1992–1995 Bosnian war. Mladic supporters have accused European countries of double standards after helping to initiate conflicts in the Middle East that have killed, and are continuing to kill, far more innocent civilians than in the whole Balkans conflict.
