By David Furness, West London Organiser-On the 5th July the West London branch contested a by-election in Grove ward in the London borough of Kingston upon Thames. Our candidate, David Child, obtained 1.1% of the vote coming sixth out of seven candidates just behind the UKIP candidate.
Our opponents were “horrified“that we were standing in their largely unenriched area even starting an online petition against our candidate.
I will explain why we decided to contest this particular election in leafy Kingston upon Thames where the Liberal Democrats rule and the only opposition is the Conservative Party and where even the Labour party has no councillors (highly unusual for a London borough).
We stood in this election as an act of defiance. We have had several encounters with far-left extremists in this borough and other boroughs in west London.
We were told to “get out of Kingston and stay out if you know what’s good for you”.
I have news for these far-left thugs. We are not getting out of Kingston; we are not getting out of London and we are not getting out of Britain. We are here to stay!
We will not be bullied or chased out of any area in London.
Some critics have said that it was a waste of time and money contesting an election where we have never stood before and where it was unlikely for us to get any support. One person told us we would get more support in mega-rich Knightsbridge.
The British National Party is a political party and political parties contest elections; that’s what they do.
I don’t want to just contest elections every four years and then only to concentrate on “safe” areas. Ideally I would like to be fighting an election every week!
These council by-elections do not cost much and there is no deposit to pay. They give excellent training to our new activists in activities such as collecting nomination signatures and canvassing. In addition we obtained some good publicity in local newspapers including one newspaper that is circulated not only in Kingston upon Thames but also in neighbouring Richmond and also in parts of Surrey.
London British National Party is very much alive and kicking and we will not abandon the British people in our capital city. We will go anywhere we want to go and will contest any election in London regardless of the likely outcome. Fear of failure will never hold us back.
News update: It seems that our efforts in this by-election are paying off. Already we are getting enquiries and several people have made donations which will now be used to set up a branch in Kingston upon Thames.
