By Simon Darby-While all eyes were on Athens last night the French elections saw the Front National actually break through and win two seats even though Marine Le Pen lost by an agonising 118 votes.

However, Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, Jean Marie Le Pen's 22-year old granddaughter became France's youngest MP in modern political history, clinching one of two seats.

Miss Maréchal-Le Pen, a law undergraduate, came top in her constituency in the southeastern Vaucluse department with 49.09 per cent of the vote after a rival Socialist refused to bow out to her mainstream Right rival. Her grandfather was by her side to see history being made.

The other far-Right MP was charismatic solicitor lawyer Gilbert Collard in the southern Gard department were he attracted 43% of the vote.

Not wishing for you to miss out on the action, you can see a potted history of the night in this video where Jean Marie does look rather pleased with himself.
