By Dr Phil Edwards-The current fuss about homosexual marriage reminds me of two strange instances I witnessed in the past – in one, a young couple came to my university laboratory door and one of the pair - a very attractive girl – produced a large tobacco pipe and proceeded to smoke it.

Strange and disorientating, as was the second instance, where two fellows were talking at a pub bar and one of them casually raised his pint glass and pretended to drink the contents with his ear!

I get a similar disorientation when seeing pictures of homosexuals and lesbians snogging in public, or depictions of same sex marriage.

If someone had told me 20 or even 10 years ago that two men or two women would be allowed – or want - to marry, I would have thought they were mad – now it seems that I’m the one who is mad – not just mad, but wicked too - a “homophobe”.

Of course, it’s only the truly insane who deny being mad, so I will say no more on that point, but I can’t shake off the feeling that the entire topic of homosexual marriage – bearing in mind the tiny proportion of homosexuals in the population – is there just to disorient us, to upset us, just as immigration, diversity, Political Correctness and all of the other “equality” nonsense has.

As some wise sage once remarked “Quem deus vult perdere, dementat prius” or “Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad".

Marriage is a bond of husband and wife, underpinning the family, stabilising the upbringing of children and forming the bedrock of society.

Anything that distorts this narrative is socially disruptive.

The apparent public acceptance of homosexuality has been achieved – as usual – by the mass media, through re branding of acts of gross indecency as “gay”, by showing “celebs” as “coming out”, by creating the sin of “homophobia” (to make up the unholy trinity of “racism, sexism and homophobia”, much beloved by the BBC) and by generally preventing a free and open debate.

A number of elderly heterosexual men have been arrested for alleged sexual offences carried out in the 1960s but when will an equivalent number of elderly homosexual men be arrested for committing acts of gross indecency prior to 1967 and the passing of the Sexual offences Act which decriminalised homosexual acts?

Would that be true “equality”?

BBC Radio 4 starts serialisation of Orwell's 1984 - this Sunday afternoon (Feb 10th).
