The British National Party’s Adam Walker secured 20.4 percent of the vote and came second, beating the Lib Dems in another town council by-election result in Spennymoor, County Durham on 16th December, reports local activist Stephen Palmer.
Mr Walker polled the fine result in the Low Spennymoor and Tudhoe Grange ward, a similar percentage to the one he earned in September earlier this year in a neighbouring ward, confirming a base of strong support in the area.
As with that previous election, the British National Party put by far the most effort into this campaign out of all the parties.
Mr Walker and his activists delivered three separate leaflets and a Voice of Freedom newspaper to every house in the ward, mostly in deep snow, as well as driving around with a tannoy system on voting day (video below).
"I think that it is important that we have stood to offer people a real choice, rather than just having existing councillors co-opt a family member or friend onto the Council,” Mr Walker said.
The full results of the by-election are:
Adam Walker, British National Party – 178 (20.4%)
Labour – 541
Liberal Democrats – 149
Turnout 18.8%
