The historic Second World War aircraft from the RAF Coningsby-based Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, passed over RAF Scampton, near Lincoln, the base from where the raid was launched in 1943.

It marked 65 years to the day since the members of 617 Squadron flew the mission to Germany to attack the Ruhr dams with their bouncing bombs.

The raid was immortalised in a 1954 film starring Richard Todd as Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC, who led the attack on the dams which disrupted Germany’s power and canal systems.

As has been previously reported the Commons challenged the Tribunal’s “unlawfully intrusive” demand that a detailed breakdown of MPs second home allowances must be provided.

The Commons also attempted to overturn the Tribunal’s decision that MPs’ addresses should be disclosed on “security” grounds.

The question now is - will “Honourable Members”, desperate to cover their tracks, seek to appeal the decision or, dare we suggest slightly tongue-in-cheek, take it to The Lords or the European Court – using OUR tax money to pay THEIR legal costs of course ?

Today we learn that even our armoured vehicles are to be supplied from foreign factories, despite the lessons of history and the fact that British manufacturers have a long and proven record of excellence in the production of British built fighting machines!

It is as though Labour and the Tories have a secret agenda to render Britain wholly dependent on foreigners for our defence.- folly (or is it treason?) unprecedented in British history.

According to the Washington Post:

General Dynamics, the US Army’s largest supplier, has been chosen by the British military as the preferred bidder to provide armored utility vehicles.

The Falls Church company will supply the British army with its Piranha 5 vehicles as part of Britain’s Future Rapid Effect System, or FRES. The program consists of as many as 3,000 vehicles that are capable of being transported by air at short notice.
“The provisional selection of Piranha 5 as the FRES utility vehicle design heralds the start of a new era for the Army in terms of capability,” Richard Dannatt, chief of the general staff of the British army, said in a statement. “This will form the backbone of the Army’s future armored vehicle requirements.”

The program will be the British army’s largest procurement ever, with a purchase price of about $31.3 billion, General Dynamics said on its Web site.

The government didn’t disclose the value of the utility vehicle portion being awarded to General Dynamics, and company spokesman Robert Doolittle said he didn’t have additional information.

The FRES fleet consists of five vehicle categories: utility, reconnaissance, medium armor, maneuver support and basic capability. Utility vehicles will likely make up two-thirds of the fleet.

The Ministry of Defence selected General Dynamics’ design ahead of rival vehicles offered by Artec, a Dutch-German group, and Nexter, a supplier of tanks and armored vehicles that is owned by the French government.

More than 9,000 Piranha vehicles have been sold to date, the company said in a statement. General Dynamics acquired the Piranha design as part of its 2003 purchase of the defense business of General Motors for about $1.1 billion.

The fourth day in the trial of the man accused of murdering Keith Brown started at 10:30 with the court being read a statement taken by WPC Laura Brown. She said that when Habib Khan was arrested he had blood on his face and on his garments.

At a later interview in the Northern Area Custody Unit, Mr Khan had stated that Keith Brown said he would kill him and that he was frightened of Mr Brown. He stated that he hit Keith with a pointed wheel brace which penetrated Keith’s body. The WPC was told that both men had fallen to the ground with Keith falling onto the sharp wheel brace forcing it further into his body.

A post-mortem statement was then given to the court which stated that the wounds Keith had suffered were caused by a knife and not a wheel brace. The jury was told that a wheel brace found in the bathroom of Mr Khan’s house did not have a pointed end it has a rounded end. Mr Khan had stated that he did not know how the wheel brace had come to be in his bathroom.

Further to this, some days later on during Mr Khan’s seventh police interview the police told him that they had found a knife, Khan then said, “I have something to tell you, I’ve decided to tell the truth.” In the statement Mr Khan had said that he was in his kitchen when he heard a commotion outside, he picked up a knife and went outside with the knife. On going down the drive Mr Khan said he saw Mr Brown holding one of his sons by the throat. He said he ran to help his son and put the knife to Mr Brown’s back and pushed into in. The jury was told that Habib Khan had stated that he and Keith Brown fell down and in the process the knife went in further to Keith’s body.

Later in the morning the court was told that the police had found a computer video of the incident hidden in a wardrobe in Mr Khan’s house. Moreover, in a statement Mr Khan admitted to taking a wheel brace putting Keith Brown’s blood on it and placing it in his car.

In effect the day ended at 12:30 when the jury were sent out until tomorrow morning as submissions by the two sets of barristers were put before the judge.

Just one other thing to add, several Muslim men were present in the public gallery some of whom were trying to intimidate onlookers and reporters with “death stares”.

If the media is correct then Nick Clegg, said to be the leader of the Lib-Dems, apparently knows this all too well.

However, what we wonder is why Mr. Clegg and a great many other Honourable members, don’t pay for the upkeep of their properties themselves – after all, they are the only ones benefiting from the exercise!

According to Manchester Evening News:-

LIBERAL Democrat leader Nick Clegg has revealed he spent a whopping £147,000 in expenses over the last year.

Mr Clegg published his Commons expenses on a Lib Dem website after putting down a challenge to the other political party leaders to do the same.

He reveals he claimed £7,000 of taxpayers’ money to repair his Sheffield home which was in a neglected condition when he bought it in early 2006.

The money was used to repair and decorate the kitchen, living room and garden.

Three more people have been arrested in connection with the fraud inquiry into City Hall-funded projects linked to former mayor’s aide Lee Jasper.

Those arrested today are Eroll Walters, 43, the project’s chairman and a close friend of Mr Jasper; a director of Brixton Base, Donald Lindo, 42, and Sharon Walters, 41. So far, six people have been arrested in connection with the fraud inquiry.

Last night’s Q & A session was totally unexpected and Nick answered hours of probing questions from the audiences.

Although the precise level of support is said to be still under under discussion it is claimed that eligible MPs can expect to claim thousands of pounds per child.

Minutes of a meeting of MPs led by the Speaker reveal that the decision to offer free or subsidised child care was taken last year. The final details are expected to be unveiled within a month.

However Matthew Elliott, who is the chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “It defies belief that despite the outcry of the last few months MPs still think they can get away with increasing their perks even more. They are well paid and generously provided for as it is without a nanny allowance. The last thing we need is politicians taking yet another step away from the lives of ordinary voters and taxpayers.”

We couldn’t agree more!

Meanwhile, in a disclosure that will surprise no-one familiar with “allowancesgate”, it has been confirmed that the Parliamentary sleaze watchdog has dismissed a complaint about the taxpayer-funded taxi journeys of Commons Speaker Michael Martin’s wife!

Standards Commissioner John Lyon reportedly claimed the more than £4,000 spent by Mary Martin on taxis was “reasonable” and within the rules!

Before I start giving an account of the day’s proceedings at Stafford Crown Court can I just apologise for knocking back so many comments. There’s a very good reason of course, that being that I neither want myself or anyone else straying into the realms of sub judice.

With that said, I can give you the latest developments in the case of the murder of Keith Brown, which as many of you will know is being covered in The Times by Dominic Kennedy. You can see his impression of the case today by clicking here, hopefully after reading what I have to say.

Julia Barker, Keith’s common-law wife, was in the witness box today. She came across as cool and collected as well as being precise with her evidence. On several occasions she was told by the defending barrister that the Khans had received death threats from Keith and their son Ashley. Julia strenuously denied this and said it was the other way round, telling the jury that Habib Khan had ” threatened to set fire to her son.” She also added that Khan had threatened to kill Keith Brown stating to a hushed court, ” he did what he had threatened, he did kill Keith Brown.”

A local man, Mr Mahmood, who knew Mr Khan from the local mosque, said that he saw Keith Brown lying on the pavement bleeding and his son Ashley in his garden with obvious head wounds. He stated that he saw Mr Khan with blood around the chest area of his Asian clothing and his sons standing where Keith Brown was lying motionless. He added that there were eight Asian men standing in Mr Khan’s drive and eight Asian women watching on the lawn at the front of his house.

Another local witness Stephen Oultram, who the court was told, was a carpet fitter on his way home from work, said in a statement read to the court that he saw Keith with a “river of blood” coming from him.

Forensic evidence from Christopher Lloyd furnished the court with the fact that clothing recovered from Habib Khan was heavily bloodstained around the chest area and sleeves. A wheel brace, the court was told, not only had traces of Ashley’s blood but also of Keith’s. Mr Lloyd also stated that a penknife handed over by one of Mr Khan’s sons allegedly used by Keith Brown to threaten them contained no DNA evidence whatsoever to connect Keith with the weapon.

A PC Lynch, then took to the witness box, who explained to the court that he had no knowledge of a brick that had been handed to him allegedly used by Keith Brown to threaten the Khans.

The judge brought the day’s proceedings to a close at 3:15 having deemed that it would be better that the second batch of forensic evidence should be offered tomorrow.

After typing this, you’ll have to excuse me for not being the in the mood to write of anything else, it would all seem relatively frivolous. I was at the funeral of Keith Brown myself and I will never forget the look on the faces of his children.

A little late with my blogging tonight as I haven’t been able to get details of the day’s proceedings at Stafford Crown Court until 20:20. The reason being that I wasn’t present myself and that Councillor Mike Coleman, who was there, had to attend a tradesman’s meeting concerning the boarding up of local shops.

Having spoken to Mike, as expected all of the defendants are trying to use the fact that they were allegedly racially abused as some kind of mitigating circumstance. Ashley, Keith Brown’s son was in the witness box today giving his account of what went on on that fateful afternoon.

One detail that has come out that I didn’t know of, was the fact that Keith and Habib Khan used to work together for eight years. In fact Keith used to give Mr Khan a lift to work every morning in his car, hardly the act of a “racist”.

Unfortunately, Julia, Keith’s widow is so emotionally distraught that she cannot bring herself to attend court and give evidence. As such the judge has ordered that a warrant is issued to compel her to attend.

All of the time this case is being monitored by representatives of the Independent Police Complaints Commission who have been provided with a wealth of documentation concerning what we regard as a shocking breach in the Police’s duty of care regarding Keith and his family. Speaking to Councillor Coleman only a few minutes ago I am disgusted to find that within that documentation are two separate allegations of Keith Brown being handcuffed in the back of a police van and beaten by two police officers, one of whom is now apparently in a senior position.

The police and the authorities may very well be able to get away with this kind of thing in other parts of Britain, but they’re not getting away with it in Stoke on Trent. We have detailed information concerning everything that has gone on in this case and it is our intention, should it be necessary, to leaflet every single house in the city.

The devastated son of Keith Brown has given his account of a violent incident which led to his father’s death.

Mr Brown, a 52-year-old father of seven, of Uttoxeter Road, Normacot, received a fatal stab wound outside his home on July 6 last year.

Ashley Barker, aged 20, this afternoon told a jury at Stafford Crown Court there had been a number of arguments between his family and the Khan family over an access road.

Habib Khan, aged 49, denies Mr Brown’s murder.

He and one of his sons Azir Saddique, aged 24, of Trentham Road, Longton also deny wounding Ashley Barker.

Another of Khan’s sons, Khazir Saddique, aged 26, also of Trentham Road, Longton has admitted wounding Mr Barker and has been remanded on bail.

Today Mr Barker denied being racist but admitted he had done some leafleting for the BNP.

He told the jury he was on the settee in the front room when he heard his mother screaming.

“I went to the front door and saw my dad on the floor, I think he was on his back in front of his van on the pavement.

“I saw two lads. One was leaning over, one was against my dad’s van. I did not really think. I just ran out and grabbed hold of them. I was trying to get to my father.

“Then I was hit on the head. I have no idea what with or who hit me. I went to the ground.

“I can’t remember much. I tried to crawl across to my old man. That is when house bricks were coming to my head.”

A police spokesman said: “Officers arrested a 19 year-old-man. He remains in custody in a London police station.”

In addition, it is claimed that the arrested man is thought to be “known to the victim’s family” - a fact that must have been known to the media - whose reporters would have spoken to family members, friends of family members, neighbours and associates - not to mention witnesses and police - as part of their news sleuthing!

Are we seriously to believe that not a single investigative reporter, from any news agency, was able to get either the name or elementary description of the suspect prior to yesterday evening - more than two days after the slaying?

Furthermore, we are also led to believe that the suspect had “previous” – meaning that the police had all the relevant information, including images, of the suspect on their files. So why, we once again ask, did they not name the suspect and release an image to the media for the purposes of enlisting the assistance of the public in apprehending this individual?

According to one report, police claim they were unable to do so for unspecified “operational reasons” - an “explanation” that falls far short of satisfying those who believe other considerations were in play!

To the rescue comes the author, David Craig, whose new book is entitled ‘Squandered’. The amount of money needlessly wasted by this government over the last ten years or so is an eye-watering £1,229,100,000,000 (£1.229 trillion) - or £20,500 for every man, woman and child over the last ten years. Now, as even Labour hasn’t got around to taxing kids yet, then the figure works out at £30,750 for every man and woman. And as it’s only the working men and women who actually pay it, the personal figure is going to be far higher than that for us working folk. And this is money that could have gone into our bank accounts to offset soaring mortgage, food and petrol costs! This is what New Labour calls ‘prudent’ economics - and, to my knowledge, does not even include the £1.4 million per hour (yes, per hour; and even more now that we‘ve given up part of our rebate) that this nation is taxed to fund the equally inefficient EU.

And you thought the £50 billion of our money used to bail out Northern Rock was bad - a mere bagatelle, my friends; a mere bagatelle!

For instance: Despite the fact that this young man was killed on Saturday morning in front of witnesses - why did it take until Monday evening – over two days later, for the police and media to release a description of the suspect? This is a particularly interesting question as it is apparent that the police knew who they were after from an early stage - as they attended at several addresses known to be associated with the suspect.

In addition, the media must have had a description - as reporters would have spoken to witnesses at length. For EVERY news agency to withold that description suggests they were requested by the police/Home Office to embargo it for 48 hours.

According to this morning’s media reports, police fear the suspect may have left the country for the “Turkish” zone of Cyprus – with whom, we understand, Britain has no extradition agreement. Had an “all ports lookout” been issued on Saturday – when, we understand, police first set out to apprehend the suspect, then this eventuality – if he has indeed left the country - could have been avoided.

A police spokesperson has stated, in a press release, that there was no racial motive to this heinous crime. How on earth can they say that? How can they possibly know the suspect’s motivation without, at the very least, having first interviewed him?

Is the police’s apparent determination to deny any racial motive for the killing, in any way related to their former reluctance to provide a description of the suspect and their apparent failure to post an “all ports lookout” earlier?

And finally, would the police have withheld a description of an assailant, delayed posting an “all ports lookout” and played down any racial motive for a crime - had the roles been reversed – with the victim being Turkish and the suspected perpetrator being a native Briton?

Based on past experience, we suspect not.

His parents’ house is among a string of addresses raided by detectives who have issued an all-ports warning over fears that he may try to flee abroad.

One of the cameramen recognises me as I go in and after a quick chat I’m relieved to find that both ITV and the BBC are to follow the trial. Primarily we want to make sure that Keith’s murder is not swept under the carpet as I’m sure some senior Establishment figures would like and two camera teams outside is an encouraging sign.

Having emptied my pockets as I passed through the security check one of the staff cracks a joke about me being on trial today. The last time I was here it was on jury service which, much to my disappointment, turned out to be a complete and utter waste of my time.

Initially we are directed to Court number four for a 10:30 start but for some reason all of the proceedings are suddenly transferred to Court number two. I speak to the BBC local reporter who seems to be particularly interested in the background to the case as is ITV’s national reporter who asks whether or not Nick will be in attendance.

In the public gallery of Court number two I bump into Sam Tunstall one of our Stoke candidates and we sit and chat about the breakthroughs and near misses on May 1st.
Just before 12 p.m. the jury is sworn in consisting of 11 white people and one Afro-Caribbean. There seems to be more men than women and the age grouping is completely mixed. The judge then sets the timetable out with subsequent proceedings scheduled to start at 10:30 every morning with a one hour lunch break at 1 p.m. and a further two hour session ending at 4 p.m.

Three men face charges, Habib Khan is charged murder and unlawful wounding and his two sons, Azir Habib Seddique and Khazir Habib are charged with unlawful wounding. The judge is told that Azir Habib has only yesterday returned from Pakistan which seems to be in breach of his bail conditions and as such he is remanded in custody.
