School places crisis in Barking and Dagenham

Fri, 18/11/2011 - 13:32

By Giuseppe De Santis – A few days before the 2011 local elections, Margaret Hodge, the Labour MP for Barking, dismissed any criticism about the demographic changes that took place in the borough by saying that things change and people must get used to it. A result of this ‘change’ was laid bare by the Barking & Dagenham Post, who ran a recent front-page headline claiming that the £23.9m given by the government to add extra school places is not enough and that Labour councillors want hundreds of millions of pounds in additional funding.

You get what you vote for: Barking and Dagenham Council to make £20m of cuts in the next year

Mon, 07/11/2011 - 15:27

By Giuseppe De Santis – During the campaign for the local elections in Barking and Dagenham in 2010, ‘anti-fascist’ groups were delivering many free papers in the borough, telling people that, if the British National Party took control, plenty of civil servants would be sacked, essential services would be slashed and many schools and libraries would be closed. It's sad that many people voted Labour out of fear only to find out that the newly elected Labour councillors are making deep cuts anyway without slashing wasteful expenditure.
