Two councillors now 'sorry' for giving convicted paedophile glowing references.

Two councillors who gave character references for one of the men convicted in the Rochdale paedostani gang case have apologised for their 'error of judgement'.

Councillor Aftab Hussain and former Mayor Zulf Ali say they regret defending Abdul Qayyum during the trial at Liverpool Crown Court.

Qayyum, of Ramsey Street, Wardleworth, was jailed for five years for conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child. Eight other men received a total of 72 years in jail after being found guilty of grooming vulnerable young girls for sex.

Police uphold democracy in Edinburgh

A well organised Police operation ensured that two rival demonstrations took place in Edinburgh yesterday with no arrests. The Scottish Defence League was able to march along Regent Road to St. Andrew’s house, where speakers addressed the crowd of about 100.

The Metropolitan Police are investigating allegations of electoral fraud in Tower Hamlets during the 2010 general election;

Elements of the investigation include a number of 1 and 2 bedroom flats that are reported to have 10 or more registered voters.

Here we have in black and white, confirmation, if indeed it was needed, of a newspaper seeking to pass itself off to the people of Manchester as an impartial provider of news, when in fact they are nothing of the sort.

Burnley Burkha Robbers

Four gang members, who staged a violent attack on Muzzafer’s Jewellers in the Lancashire town of Burnley have been jailed for a total of more than 42 years, the gang included one dressed in a burkha.

Footage obtained form the town’s CCTV showed how one robber posed as a female wearing a burkha to get into the jewellers in Brougham Street, followed immediately by three partners wielding an imitation rifle, a sword, and metal baseball bats.

Planned new Waitrose in Stirling hindered by nearby Islamic Centre legal threats

Plans for a Waitrose superstore in Stirling are being threatened by nearby Muslims who object to the premises selling alcohol ‘in the shadow of’ their Islamic Centre.

The Islamic Centre is now threatening potential legal action and judicial review over the panel’s decision.  The chairman of the Central Scotland Islamic Centre stated that alcohol sales in such close proximity to a mosque is "an insult to the Islamic faith".

Over 300,000 immigrants claim asylum in the EU

By Adam Walker-The EU received 301,000 asylum applications in 2011, the European Commission has announced.

The figure is an increase of 42,000 on the previous year.

It is estimated that around 90 per cent of claims were from new applicants and that around ten per cent were repeat applicants.

Most claimants were from the third world, particularly Middle Eastern countries.
