Slavery Lessons the Anti-White Establishment Will Not Teach Our Children

September 1, 2008 by BNP News

In the anti-white mania which has gripped modern Britain, the Atlantic Slave Trade is to be given wide prominence in schools from this term onwards — but the million Europeans who were enslaved by Muslims in North Africa between 1530 and 1780 will be ignored.

The untold story of the million whites enslaved by non-whites is covered in a new book by Robert Davis, professor of history at Ohio State University. He developed a unique methodology to calculate the number of white Christians who were enslaved along Africa’s Barbary Coast, arriving at much higher slave population estimates than any previous studies had found.

Most other accounts of slavery along the Barbary coast didn’t try to estimate the number of slaves, or only looked at the number of slaves in particular cities, Davis said.

Most previously estimated slave counts have thus tended to be in the thousands, or at most in the tens of thousands. Davis, by contrast, has calculated that between 1 million and 1.25 million European Christians were captured and forced to work in North Africa from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Davis’s new estimates appear in the book Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters: White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast, and Italy, 1500-1800 (Palgrave Macmillan).

“Enslavement was a very real possibility for anyone who travelled in the Mediterranean, or who lived along the shores in places like Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, and even as far north as England and Iceland.”

“Much of what has been written gives the impression that there were not many slaves and minimizes the impact that slavery had on Europe,” Davis said. “Most accounts only look at slavery in one place, or only for a short period of time. But when you take a broader, longer view, the massive scope of this slavery and its powerful impact become clear.”

Davis said it is useful to compare this Mediterranean slavery to the Atlantic slave trade that brought black Africans to the Americas. Over the course of four centuries, the Atlantic slave trade was much larger — about 10 to 12 million black Africans were brought to the Americas.

But from 1500 to 1650, when trans-Atlantic slaving was still in its infancy, more white Christian slaves were probably taken to Barbary than black African slaves to the Americas, according to Davis.

“One of the things that both the public and many scholars have tended to take as given is that slavery was always racial in nature — that only blacks have been slaves. But that is not true,” Davis said. “We cannot think of slavery as something that only white people did to black people.”

During the time period Davis studied, it was religion and ethnicity, as much as race, that determined who became slaves.

Pirates (called corsairs) from cities along the Barbary Coast in north Africa — cities such as Tunis and Algiers — would raid ships in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, as well as seaside villages to capture men, women and children.

The impact of these attacks was devastating — France, England, and Spain each lost thousands of ships, and long stretches of the Spanish and Italian coasts were almost completely abandoned by their inhabitants.

Although hundreds of thousands of Christian slaves were taken from Mediterranean countries, Davis noted, the effects of Muslim slave raids was felt much further away: it appears, for example, that through most of the 17th century the English lost at least 400 sailors a year to the slavers.

Even Americans were not immune. For example, one American slave reported that 130 other American seamen had been enslaved by the Algerians in the Mediterranean and Atlantic between 1785 and 1793.

Davis said the vast scope of slavery in North Africa has been ignored and minimized, in large part because it is on no one’s agenda to discuss what happened. “The enslavement of Europeans doesn’t fit the general theme of European world conquest and colonialism that is central to scholarship on the early modern era,” he said.

Many of the countries that were victims of slavery, such as France and Spain, would later conquer and colonize the areas of North Africa where their citizens were once held as slaves. Maybe because of this history, Western scholars have thought of the Europeans primarily as “evil colonialists” and not as the victims they sometimes were, Davis said.

Davis said another reason that Mediterranean slavery has been ignored or minimized has been that there have not been good estimates of the total number of people enslaved. People of that time — both Europeans and the Barbary Coast slave owners — did not keep detailed, trustworthy records of the number of slaves. In contrast, there are extensive records that document the number of Africans brought to the Americas as slaves.

So Davis developed a new methodology to come up with reasonable estimates of the number of slaves along the Barbary Coast. Davis found the best records available indicating how many slaves were at a particular location at a single time. He then estimated how many new slaves it would take to replace slaves as they died, escaped or were ransomed.

“The only way I could come up with hard numbers is to turn the whole problem upside down — figure out how many slaves they would have to capture to maintain a certain level,” he said. “It is not the best way to make population estimates, but it is the only way with the limited records available.”

Putting together such sources of attrition as deaths, escapes, ransomings, and conversions, Davis calculated that about one-fourth of slaves had to be replaced each year to keep the slave population stable, as it apparently was between 1580 and 1680. That meant about 8,500 new slaves had to be captured each year. Overall, this suggests nearly a million slaves would have been taken captive during this period.

Using the same methodology, Davis has estimated as many as 475,000 additional slaves were taken in the previous and following centuries. The result is that between 1530 and 1780 there were almost certainly 1 million and quite possibly as many as 1.25 million white, European Christians enslaved by the Muslims of the Barbary Coast.

Davis said his research into the treatment of these slaves suggests that, for most of them, their lives were every bit as difficult as that of slaves in America. “As far as daily living conditions, the Mediterranean slaves certainly didn’t have it better,” he said.

While African slaves did grueling labor on sugar and cotton plantations in the Americas, European Christian slaves were often worked just as hard and as lethally — in quarries, heavy construction, and above all rowing the corsair galleys themselves.

Davis said his findings suggest that this invisible slavery of European Christians deserves more attention from scholars.

“We have lost the sense of how large enslavement could loom for those who lived around the Mediterranean and the threat they were under,” he said. “Slaves were still slaves, whether they were black or white, and whether they suffered in America or North Africa.”

This useless pathetic government are incapable of preaching to anyone. Name me one individual in power that has the guts to stand up for the indigenous people. Every last one of them are reprehensible in the extreme.
This anti-white bias extends well back into the 90s. I took an O.U. diploma course where slavery was part of the subject matter in understanding international trade.
While they acknowledged that slavery was common in many cultures, they qualified their version of slavery as being white on black. Political correctness was present then and is now abundant in every action of every public sector body. Makes me sick that Great Britain was instrumental in abolishing the slave trade but we whiteys are forever damned.
Roll up, roll up you descendants of slavers from Ghana, Nigeria etc, etc and we will give you free housing, free medical care, free education (slanted just for you) and a fist full of benefits.

Let’s not forget that across North Africa, before Muslims came through slashing and killing, it was largely Christian - many of whom were descendants of Greek, Roman and Gothic peoples.

Even the light skinned Berber peoples were persecuted.

Don’t forget also that the Islamic conquest of Spain resulted in genocide and slavery (dhimmtude) for ethnic Spaniards until their rescue during the Reconquest by the remaining Christian northern regions like Gallicia, Castile and Navarre.

    Good post - here is a bit more for you to teach;

In 1627 Islamic pirates captured Lundy in the Bristol channel - for about 5 years they used it as a base for raiding, whole villages were kidnapped and shipped off to North Africa - mostly from East Looe in Cornwall and Baltimore in County Cork, British men, women and CHILDREN became white slaves in Muslim north Africa - but that’s ok to ignore it is it as it’s not about slavery - just white slaves!

Willberforce supposed to have abolished slavery in the 19th century and what would he think if he saw today in the U K - slavery in the sex trade , domestic service , gangs of illegal workers working for a pittance rigidly conrolled , with all their rights and freedoms taken from them . Thank you E U , thank you Nu -Lbour , thank you Human rights lawyers thank you to all the contrbutors of this sorry mess and for landing this proud nation back in the middle of Dickensian times . Along with Moslem Slave Masters, what about the indigenous British who worked under slave conditions for poor wages? A mine in Nottinghamshire flooded in 1840, with the workers trapped inside and still are, all of the grand old age of 5yrs old!! When the Parliament of the time wanted to raise the age of mineworkers to 14,the owners insisted on 11yrs. If that is’nt slavery, I dont know what is. So all you trendy, lefty, Common Purpose a—oles beware, the BNPwill have some reckoning to do and that can’t be too soon!

The youngsters in my family were each bought a book the last time this anti white rhetoric started up.
    Author Giles Milton..Title White Gold..published 2005
Short review…ARM British children with the facts..
    From Publishers Weekly
For this harrowing story of white captives in 18th-century Morocco, Milton (author of the highly praised Nathaniel’s Nutmeg) draws primarily on the memoir of a Cornish cabin boy, Thomas Pellow, who was taken by Islamic pirates in 1716 and sold as a slave to the legendarily tyrannical Sultan Moulay Ismail. Pellow remained in Morocco for more than 20 years, his family barely recognizing him when he at last escaped home. Placing Pellow’s tale within wider horizons, Milton describes how, during the 17th and 18th centuries, thousands of European captives were snatched from their coastal villages by Islamic slave traders intent on waging war on Christendom. Put into forced labor and appalling living conditions, they perished in huge numbers. As a pragmatic convert to Islam, Pellow fared better, earning a wife who bore him a daughter. Milton includes Pellow’s years as a soldier in Moulay Ismail’s army and draws out his cliff-hanging escape back to England. Pellow’s sensational tale dominates the book, and though rendered in seductively poised prose, in the end it feels short on ideas and argument. Milton also fails to cite other historians working in this area.

Arabs were more involved than anyone else and still are today! Black folk have become Dhimmi’s too afraid to speak the truth.

I too am fed up with the bleeding heart, limp wristed idiots who just want to denigrate our country. The “Atlantic” slave trade from West Africa to the Americas was not exclusively carried out by Britain, in fact we were by no means the largest trader, Spain, Portugal, France and later the USA, were also involved. Each of these had colonies in the Americas.
The other fact conveniently overlooked by the apologists is that it was the West African chiefs who collected and traded these slaves to the Europeans. Either selling or trading their convicts, malcontents or prisoners from inter tribal wars to the European traders on the coast. As one Nigerian acquaintance of mine (a chiefs son, studying here at the LSE) said to me about a Jamaican acquaintance, “We, (Nigerians) used to sell these fellows to you (Europeans) as slaves!! Another important fact forgotten was that Britain was the first country to abolish slavery and the Royal Navy was used for anti slavery patrols for the remainder of the 19th century.
The biggest slave trading activities took place on the East Coast of Africa almost exclusively by the Arabs on the natives in East Africa, this started centuries earlier and finished only comparitively recently in the 20th century. In fact the Northern Rhodesia Police, in which I had the honour to serve, was formed at the end of the 19th century to prevent Arab slavers raiding the North Eastern tribes of the country.
The UN also reported a few years ago that slavery was still being practiced in parts of the Sudan by muslims against the christian inhabitants in the south of Sudan.

  11. Dolly Capax on September 1st, 2008 3:36 pm

Mohammed himself captured, bought, sold and owned slaves. So it is hardly surprising that his followers should have done the same, and continue to think nothing much of it. In contrast, Britain led the way in outlawing the slave trade and then slavery because of its Christian conscience.

Mohammed’s example ( Mohammed is the ‘perfect model’ in Islam ) continues to influence Islamic attitudes to slavery as do the rules he was responsible for with respect to females. Winston Churchill remarked that Islam would have trouble in banning slavery so long as any female had to be the personal possession of a man under Islamic law.

  12. ED on September 1st, 2008 4:18 pm

There are many forms of slavery, and undoubtedly the worst is to be torn from your country and family and forced to work against your will in a foreign land, but there were many other forms of slavery, much less transparent, the navy press gangs, the children forced to work in the coal mines, the mills, the tin and lead mines, children as young as six forced to work twelve hours a day, six days a week in brick works, children as young as five forced to become chimney sweeps, children forced into prostitution, the list goes on and on, and who countenanced and encouraged the exploitation and degradation of the innocent children, the Tories.

Over the last ten years the labour party have joined the Tories in their contempt for the British people, particularly the British working class, labours contempt manifests itself in higher and higher taxes, coupled with vastly expanded restrictions on our liberties and freedoms.
If you want to continue to sell your family, nation, and race into slavery vote Lib/Lab/Con, if you prefer freedom vote BNP.
    Regards ED Cheshire.

The word b>slave comes etymologically from Slavs, who presumably count as white.

The word slave first appears in English around 1290, spelled sclave. The spelling is based on Old French esclave from Medieval Latin sclavus, “Slav, slave,” first recorded around 800. Sclavus comes from Byzantine Greek sklabos (pronounced sklävs) “Slav,” which appears around 580. Sklavos approximates the Slavs’ own name for themselves, the Slovnci, surviving in English Slovene and Slovenian. The spelling of English slave, closer to its original Slavic form, first appears in English in 1538. Slavs became slaves around the beginning of the ninth century when the Holy Roman Empire tried to stabilize a German-Slav frontier.

  16. Grumpygit on September 1st, 2008 6:40 pm

Islam was born out of warfare, genocide, slavery and enforced conversions. When Mohammed was waging war against Mecca, in the seventh century, Christianity was the dominant religion of power and wealth. As the faith of the Roman Empire, it spanned the entire Mediterranean, including the Middle East, where it was born. The Christian world, therefore, was a prime target for the earliest Caliphs, and would remain so for the next thousand years.

The warriors of Islam struck out against the Christians shortly after Mohammed’s death. They were extremely successful. Palestine, Syria and Egypt - once the most heavily Christian areas in the world- quickly succombed. By the eighth century, Muslim armies had conquered all of Christian North Africa and Spain. In the eleventh century, the Seljuk Turks conquered Asia Minor (modern Turkey), which had been Christian since the time of St. Paul. The old Roman Empre, known to historians as the Byzantine Empire was reduced to little more than Greece.

Islam has spread throughout the world by this means and slavery was only one aspect of their expansion. A thousand years later, today, moslems have seen the way the rest of the Christian world can be conquered, only by using methods that are more applicable to modern society eg immigration, massive birth-rates and the gradual introduction of their religion, culture and laws by establishing mini-states within the state.

I suspect the time will come, as it did nearly one thousand years ago, that modern Christians will have to form their own crusades to defend their territories and religion from moslem aggression, just as our ancestors were forced to do.

It seems the “Ethnic Enrichment Industry” is again in overdrive spreading anti-white propaganda. We the Ethnic Britons have to pay for a “Tirade of Insults”.

We must endeavour to convert more of the remaining “Indiginious Britons” of the disintegrating Liblabcon Artists to vote BNP. Soon the Liblabcon Artists will be left with the “Banana Republic Voting Society” to attempt to “Fix Elections”.

As the BNP expands it will become more difficult to execute voting fraud.

Here’s a bit of hidden history from the pen of William Cobbett, “a radical Conservative” and champion of the rural poor in England during the hard times after the Napoleonic Wars

“In taking my leave of this beautiful vale, I have to express my deep shame, as an Englishman, at beholding the general extreme poverty of those who cause this vale to produce such quantities of food and raiment. This is, I verily believe it, the worst used labouring people upon the face of the earth . Dogs and hogs and horses are treated with more civility; and as to food and lodging, how gladly would the labourers change with them! This state of things never can continue many years!

    http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/text/chap_page.jsp;jsessionid=67C27E09CE92E48807BE4FD6EAE2DE27?t_id=Cobbett&c_id=22

He undertook a series of “Rural Rides” whose purpose was investigative. In the Avon Valley in Wilts. Cobbett made a computation of the agricultural product of the area, which was great for the land was rich and fertile, and compared it to what was left over for the locals when the greater bulk had been carted off for the benefit of court lackeys, the nobility, fund holders and stock jobbers. Not a lot apparently, some things don’t change much.

As with the early industrial workers this is an airbrushed history. It is said truly that history is manipulated, and reinvented, to serve the “needs” of the present. And so the history of much of our people is airbrushed out of existence so that they can be made to feel personally guilty for black slavery, when as Cobbett movingly points out their own descendants were treated worse than dogs themselves.

Truly this is a sick outrage and it seems to me that historians should hang their heads in shame for allowing this perfidy to take root.

Who does this benefit? Who are the enemy? We know them well. Globalists, Liblabcon politicos, City spivs, Liberals, twisted Marxists who turned their backs on our working class people. And how should we nationalists serve these carrion? With a nice pat on the back and a large slice of choccy cake? I don’t think so.

The book is well worth a read - some of it is online here, I guess it will be specially meaningful to those who know the south of England well. It burns with passionate fury at the injustice and oppression that Cobbett saw all around him. We have taken up his torch in our day.

Teaching slavery in schools serves no good purpose, it can only sow more anti-white feelings in the minds of young black kids and adds to their victim hood syndrome.
People should be taught about who it was that first sold the slaves to the Europeans, it was black African Muslims , the Muslims of the Sahel got rich selling Slaves to the North Africans long before the Europeans came along, the Pagan Vikings also sold many Irish Slaves to the North African Muslims, the Muslims really did love their Slaves.
