Here in Worcester we have a smallish minority of Muslims, mainly settled for at least two generations in one area. Last year a Halal butcher’s shop opened. It’s getting closer. Most large shopping centres i.e., Meadowhall, Sheffield, have a policy of not allowing ‘hoodies’ and or baseball caps. You are respectfully requested to remove either on entry. Yet on a recent visit several burkha clad people were happily strolling through one of the biggest and most densely populated shopping areas of the north.

Even without the threat of hidden weapons, suicide vests, etc., and not being able to identify the woman (or man even), the tent-like burka/burkha is being used as a weapon in itself–one of intimidation. It must be really frightening for young children seeing these Darth Vader lookalikes roaming the streets. It looks threatening - especially in black–and it’s meant to. It would be bad enough if they at least exposed (God forbid) their faces, but to have just their eyes showing in letterbox fashion is totally unacceptable in Western civilized society. They know this only too well, which is another reason why they do it–an added bonus so to speak.

The most extreme side (there is no moderate side) of Islam may be the only part that makes its women totally cover up like this, but they must all just love the way it makes them look. It should never have been permitted in the first place and should be banned forthwith. While they’re at it, they should also ban those grotesque Abu Qatada type beards which tend to conceal one’s true identity–especially those in jail for attempted mass murder, etc.

I have nothing whatsoever against women wearing headscarves for religious reasons (looks quite flattering on some) but once they start to partially cover the face–forget it. They should also never object to removing it for security reasons (when required or asked) and for things like driving licences, passport photos, etc. If they do object, they have pitched their ‘tent’ in the wrong country.

While I certainly agree with you as regards removal of the burkha for identification purposes, outright banning of such religious-related things as beards could be a slippery slope. Would you also require it for Amish, Mennonites, or ultra-orthodox Mormons? What about orthodox Jews with their side braids and long black coats, or the Sikhs’ turbans? I never, ever suggested banning mustachios! My best friend (former RAF fighter pilot now in his eighties) has ’sported’ one for decades - ever since I’ve known him. Regarding the Vitamin D and rickets comment by “Ed”, this is even becoming an issue for white-skinned folk.

The elderly in our care homes are particularly vulnerable, due to lack of sun exposure and Vit. D deficient diets.

Children are spending more and more time in their rooms with computers and televisions. Back in the late ’60s and early ’70s when I was a kid, after school we would go to the “rec” on our bikes and play with other kids. We had 45 minutes of sport at school 4 days a week, and 1.5 hours on a Friday. Bare arms and legs gave us all the Vitamin D we needed from sun exposure.

The latest California research has shown that there are a string of ills that are directly connected to Vit. D status: colo-rectal cancer, breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, rickets, schizophrenia, tuberculosis, melanoma and heart disease. Use of most sunscreens gives you the “burka effect” by almost completely blocking UVB rays; these are the ones that produce Vitamin D in the skin. Incidentally, free range sheep, cows, pigs and chickens produce Vit D by the action of sunlight. The addition of (synthetic) Vitamin D to intensively reared animals is an extremely poor substitute.

Burka-clad women in the Middle East have a vastly-increased rate of Multiple Sclerosis. In Britain, we are seeing an exponential rise in the number of Tuberculosis cases. My aunt caught TB back in the 1930s, and was sent to a hospital in Malvern for a whole 12 months of “sunlight therapy”. She was 100% cured. In a recent Indonesian study, a large daily dose of D3 (10,000iu) cured all study participants 100%–without expensive drug therapy. Vit. D restricts the growth of the bacillus within cells.

With TB carriers arriving here with TB on a daily basis from third world countries, it IS eventually going to become more common amongst the indigenous British population. An example is that Somali immigrants have around an 80-fold higher infection rate than Polish immigrants. Asian immigrants have about 1/3 of the rate of Somalis.

Oh, and yes, I take a hefty natural Vitamin D3 supplement most days, especially given the appalling lack of sun this summer which means, once again, I’ll be one of the few folks who doesn’t get hammered by colds and flu this winter!

Belfast was one of the RN ships which helped sink the Scharnhorst on Chistmas Day 1943. In my parents’ time, they had to wear hats outdoors; in my grandparents’ time in that part of the world, they had to wear solar topees lined with red felt, for fear of the wicked sun and the addling effect it would have on British settlers. In my time, we kids spent hours playing outdoors, wearing shorts and short-sleeved shirts, with open sandals. Hats were rarely worn, and sunblock cream never applied. We thrived on this bold approach to the tropical sun! Most Brits can tan rather well, given half a chance. Whatever my current health afflictions, they certainly do not relate to my having been exposed to the tropical sun, for we Brits are the most remarkably resilient, adaptable people I know of; we are tremendously tough, and we thrive wherever the Empire once took us! I see little English kids today all swathed in long sleeves and slathered in sun-block at the English beach, ‘neath that pallid English August sun, and I laugh; poor, over-protected little mites! A good dose of bare-skinned Empire-building would do us all good.

With all this talk of a security problem being caused by female/male Muslims wearing burkas, let us not forget the main reason why they are worn (by the women anyway). This female is MINE, ALL MINE and no-one else can look at her. That’s the main–if not the only–reason for wearing the burka. Muslim women are not second class under their law; class doesn’t come into it because they are simply objects to be owned by men. By their own MAN-MADE LAW (oh dear, sorry because you lot don’t agree with man-made law, do you?) women have no rights, other than to serve their MAN. Ed may cut this but I have never understood why the women of Great Britain, who usually are quite vocal about their rights, simply sitting back and saying nothing about this unacceptable situation. Either the people of Great Britain are free, or they are not free. You cannot have different rules for different groups based on race and/or religion, that’s apartheid, isn’t it? All I can say is, all you Mums and Dads out there, this one day could be YOUR daughters. Wake up! These Muslims are in parliament, the house of Lords, the Military, the local councils, media and every other aspect of our lives. Wake up please. The BNP can only do so much. Come on board and help us fight the good fight, or you are done for.
