Ireland Rejects the Lisbon Treaty

Irish Justice Minister, Dermot Ahern

has conceded defeat!!!

Go raibh maith agaibh

(Thank you Ireland)

The Lisbon Treaty has been rejected by Irish voters sparking a crisis for plans to reform European Union structures.

A total of 53.4 per cent voted to reject the treaty, while 46.6 per cent voted in favour. All but 10 constituencies rejected the treaty, with a total of 752,451 voting in favour of Lisbon and 862,415 votes against. Turnout was 53.1 per cent.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen’s constituency of Laois Offaly was last to declare a result and voted in favour of the treaty.

Tallies from early on in the count this morning showed the No campaign appeared to be winning in most constituencies across the State, with significant majorities emerging from rural and urban working class areas in particular.

Luxembourg Premier and Finance Minister Jean-Claude Juncker said the defeat of the Lisbon Treaty represents a new “European crisis.”

“Ireland said ‘no’ to the Lisbon Treaty,” Juncker told reporters in Luxembourg today. “This is not good for Europe.”

Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan has said Ireland had lost influence in Europe. Speaking as final results were being counted this evening, Mr Lenihan thanked those who voted Yes but said he was “very, very disappointed” with the outcome. “I think it is a very sad day for this country and for Europe as well,” Mr Lenihan said.

He said it was a “serious matter for Ireland” adding: “We have to accept the decision of the people…and that’s democracy and I accept that.

Minister for Foreing Affairs Micheál Martin, who is also director of Fianna Fáil’s referendum campaign, said there was a perceived lack of information on the treaty. “People were on the doorstep were saying ‘I still don’t know enough about this treaty’.”

This was a “significant” factor, the Minister claimed. The Minister said he was not blaming the Referendum Commission but said there was a sense that the treaty “just didn’t register” and “lacked a clear tangible”.

In his own constituency, Cork South Central, the treaty was rejected by more than 55 per cent of the electorate there.

Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív conceded defeat this morning for the treaty in the constituency, Galway West, while Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny also conceded defeat for the treaty in Mayo early on in the count.

Speaking this afternoon, Fianna Fáil’s Dick Roche said the challenge now was how Ireland would “see a way forward from this”, adding that the “reality is we are not in a position to ratify this treaty.”

The founder of Libertas, Declan Ganley, who campaigned for a No vote, said: “The Irish people have rejected the Lisbon Treaty. “it is a great day for Irish democracy”, he added.

“This is democracy in action . . . and Europe needs to listen to the voice of the people,” Mr Ganley said. He added that the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, “has a mandate to go back to Europe and do the best job possible”.

  1. Three cheers for the Irish!
Shame we dont stand in Hull and make a British Referendum an issue and make use the premier Eurosceptic party above UKIP.

  2. It is reported on the news just now that the EUromuppets are to ignore the results and the process is to continue.
Interesting times ahead, that’s for sure.

  3. This is great news, but unfortunately it won’t make the slightest difference - because the EU had planned to ignore the Irish referendum anyway!

  4. The corrupt dictators in Brussels will try ANYTHING to get around this democratic decision. Their every move must be watched. Anyway, well done the Irish!!! http://www.stopcp.com/sodtheeu.php

  5. The 26 other countries will carry on and ratify anyway, Dictatorships don’t abide by democracy.
I can forsee mass unrest to come. The will of France, and the Dutch was ignored.
If they break the agreement that ALL 27 countries had to agree to this treaty is dead, then Democracy is DEAD.

  6. Well Brown, what do you think of Irish democracy in action?.
You know what the English want and you are denying us, so much for English democracy.
    Bottler Brown.
    Rattled Brown.
    Embattled Brown.
Your slow, bumbling treacherous embarrassing inevitable exit from No.10 is a pleasure to behold.

  8. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said he had spoken to Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen and agreed with him that this was not a vote against the EU.

“Ireland remains committed to a strong Europe,” he said.

“Ratifications should continue to take their course.”

    Am I missing something here?

  9. What a bunch of little Bobby Dazzlers they are. The history between us has been edgey to say the least. but the friendship between individual Irish and Mainland folk has allways been good. The fearless Irish soldier has shed his blood fighting alongside our boys in to many wars to mention. The whole of europe owe you a great debt.
I read from Lickyalips post that the criminals in brussels will ignore this vote and carry on. Well I’m not surprised. the history of the EUSSR has never sat comfortably with democracy. By doing this if that is what they contemplate, the eyes of a great many will be descaled instantly revealing the true nature of the beast.
Thanks again to the Irish. hip hip hooray.

    no surprise there then.

  11. Well let me just make a quick guess - as was shown when Mr Griffin and Mr Collett were tried twice for the same non-crime, I think they’ll keep going until they get the “right result”. Don’t ever forget Sponge-Gordon Brown-Pants saying after Nick and Mark were unanimously found not-guilty by a jury that “the law needs to be tighten up”

Mind you, Sponge-Gordon is out of a job shortly.

  12. Is it not strange that the Total Democratic Votes in the whole of the E U are against the Lisbon Treaty.

Let us hope that the voters of Henley will make their point in the next few days.

Why can we not all in Europe have a vote.

  13. This is a reason for celebration and I am over the moon;
But I also see it as the inevitable rallying call for us all to stand up to this monster called the EUSSR!

  15. I was in Dublin City last weekend and spoke to many people regarding the referendum, and the vast majority were unhappy about relinquishing anymore of their hard earned freedom to Brussels. Thank God for the Republic of Ireland and its people, who are not afraid to repel the sweeping disease of the EU, “slainte”.

  16. Communism does not recognise democracy. That is why the English have been denied a referendum. The Irish have rejected the Treaty but they will be ignored and the construction of the EU Superstate will continue, whatever the wishes of the people.

    Posted by N Brown | June 13, 2008, 7:11 pm
  17. This is the best news we have had this year, unfortunately no means yes to these Communists, being knocked back means just change the rules and tell a few more lies. What the British People need to do now is lean hard on these treacherous brass necked Marxists, to make them give us a vote, the public need to have it spelled out to them just how serious the situation is.

  18. And…the petulant foot-stamping from Brussels has already started!

It is all so reminiscent of the Generals in the Berlin Bunker in 1945, quite unable to accept that their ‘plans’ for Europe were dashed … even as the guns drew ever closer still.

  20. ”David Milliband said on Sky News Britain will continue with Ratification”.-Bertiebert

It’s obvious David Miliband has learned his Red Totalitarian lessons well from Ralph, his Marxist lecturer father.

Lesson 1: The people don’t count. Only the opinions of Marxist ‘intellectuals’ do.

Lesson 2: If the people still don’t vote as you’d like, keep rigging the vote until they do, i.e., more mass immigration, especially to Ireland, discount the entire 27-country majority needed to pass the Treaty & keep working on ratification anyway.

Lesson3: If that still don’t work, send in the tanks to control these ‘fascists’?

  22. Here’s how the NO result is being reported by Fox News:

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,366682,00.html

“…In the EU’s power base of Brussels and other European capitals, leaders vowed to complete ratification of the Lisbon treaty through the governments of the other 26 members — even though, legally, the treaty cannot come into force because of the Irish rejection.”

Note this bit of DoubleSpeak from an old Commie …

“…German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed that patient diplomacy might eventually turn the Irish “No” to a future “Yes.”
Business as usual in Brussels, then.

    Posted by Lickyalips | June 13, 2008, 8:27 pm
  23. So even the Irish, who seem to have done very well out their membership of the EU, have rejected the wider implications of the Treaty.

In its election manifesto Labour pledged not to sign up to an EU constitution without putting the issue to the British electorate under a referendum. Labour has refused to honour this pledge and we face losing much of our sovereignty when they ratify the Lisbon Treaty – which they will, Irish No vote notwithstanding ( see France and Holland). We British have been treated with utter contempt by the traitors of Westminster as they know a referendum would return a resounding No vote. This is not democracy – its fascism. The true fascists of today are Labour and the LibDems and Tories who have supported or allowed them to get away with this monstrous deed.

Faced with the reality of European rule, imposed upon us with questionable legality, the British people will have no other course than to engage in civil disobedience, which I predict will happen on a massive scale. Why should we allow arrogant, unelected little Hitlers from this blatantly corrupt institution to rule our lives, whilst simultaneously fleecing us? We don’t want them and were never given the democratic right to say so.

About to watch ‘The Battle of Britain’ on More 4. Then our brave young pilots and the population at large knew who the enemy were and what they had to do. Now the enemy is within us in our bastions of power but ultimately we will defeat them just as we did in 1940.

  24. Well done to the Irish people for voting against the horrible EU constution - sorry, I mean Lisbon Treaty!’ It is a joke that we supposedly live in a democracy when vile MPs and unelected suits in Brussels do not allow the 500m Europeans a vote but instead have the arrogance to agree to something that no one wants. Then that idiot David Miliband gets a say - who cares about his ‘opinion’ - he is ‘Bottler’ Brown’s puppet - nothing more. I am not anti - europe ‘yet’… but not far off with the way things are going. But 100% anti EU. Yesterday I read in the paper that the latest suit to join Brussels is a convicted fraudster! It’s great isn’t it! The sooner we are out of the EU the better.

  25. What a great day for democracy and freedom. Thank you Ireland - we owe you one! Let’s have a bit of a celebration now, but keep the powder dry, those arrogant sneering power-mad dictators in Brussels will never give up their attempt to stifle the whole of Europe.

They have tried democracy twice and failed.

No doubt they have a secret “Plan B”, which we must be prepared for, I bet “Plan B” will simply ignore democracy, somehow they’ll weasel the EU Constitution in through the back door, probably the usual Salami tactics, (slice by slice), stealthily so they think we won’t notice.

The sooner we leave this corrupt club and get back to our own family the better?

Slight change of subject - did you all notice those top secret papers on some terrorists which were lost by MI6 (or whoever) were marked “for UK/USA/Canada/Australia/New Zealand eyes only”. I’m a grown man but I nearly wept for joy that we still retain close links with the only countries I’d trust. Why dont we ditch the EU and join up with them?

    Anyway THANK YOU IRELAND!!.

  27. There is a very wise Irish proverb that says, “Anything that keeps a politician humble is healthy for democracy”, and while Brian Lenihan, Minister for Justice, and a pro-Lisbon Treaty campaigner, humbly admits today, “We have to accept the decision of the people …”, we have David Miliband, with almost indecent haste, arrogantly announcing the intentions of the New Labour government to press on with ratification!

Does someone need to sit down with Mr. Miliband and explain rudimentary expressions such as, ‘dead in the water’, and, ‘flogging a dead horse’?! The Dutch didn’t want the Lisbon Treaty, neither did the French, nor, now, do the Irish. How many ‘bloody noses’ does it take for the UK government to either abandon the Treaty altogether or give it’s citizens a long overdue referendum on the matter?

Something very sinister and corrupt has decamped from Brussels to the political heart of our Nation, where it sits and bides it time, waiting to devour our hard-worn democracy and much-cherished sovereignty.

I, for one, am going to do my very best to make sure this never happens.

  29. The Irish (god bless them) have given us precious time to work out our strategy, we know that One Principle, One Master motive will never go away the Subjugation of European civilisation, I believe that in this matter our enemies enemy is our friend, we can succeed only on a united front. Viper Milliband shows his hand immediately, he will use Parliament which is infested with traitors to carry on ratify the Constitution, and treat the Irish as they have always done, as SIMPLE FOOLS. PS never mistake Milliband for a fool, he is the most dangerous man in Britain.

  30. So, at last, the ordinary Irish people (who have fought so long and hard to acheive their own independance and are only now starting to get it) have seen the constitution for what it really is and realised that it was all just smoke and mirrors even though they had been bribed with vast ammounts of subsidy money.
It would also appear that the Spanish, Italian and German people are starting to wake up to the reality of a central totalitarian government which will eventually remove any freedom that they have gained in the last hundred years or so.

  31. It’s time for a referendum on the EU Treaty here in the UK . But we know that this unscrupulous Government will not grant the electorate their desire , knowing full well that our democratic wishes would strike a fatal blow to this grotesque charter .

We don’t want political stunts from our MPs , our rights are being eroded it is true , but I am sure that most people would have viewed it far more noble of David Davis to stand down from his position on the issue of the electorate not being granted a referendum on the EU Treaty , as opposed to a comparatively small extension of 14 days on the maximum detention period .

  35. With so many Irish relatives, from my dad’s side, especially in & around Cork, i just couldn’t be happier for Ireland having told the democracy despising crooks at the EU where to shove their power crazed projects of tyranical domination! You simply cannot put a price on keeping democracy & Ireland showed that it does not take kindly to bribes & threats from the hideous overgrown monster of Brussells!
Well done!, Ireland, you were very rightly given a democratic opportunity & you did exactly the right thing with it. Lucky you! Government promises here mean nothing.
Still, it’s late, i’m on my last Guinness (have always loved it & sure puts lead in yer pencil!) & somehow since yesterday it’s tasting better than ever.
Too right it was true “democracy in action”…Long live Irish democracy! FANTASTIC!!!

  36. When I heard the news this morning I was so giddy with joy that I had an idea.

Forget the EEC and instead establish a new federation, offshore from Europe, called the Anglo Celtic Union, consisting of four States - England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, each with its own Parliament.

The Anglo Celtic Union would be one Common Market and have a common citizenship and a central, Federal Government controlling things like defence and the currency. The Federal government - i.e. the Federal Parliament and administration and Supreme Court - would be headquartered in the Isle of Man.

    Silly dream?

  37. The Irish people’s successful vote for freedom shows that the political quislings and their supporters are a minority and that when all of the people are given the opportunity, thanks to the commendable foresight of whoever drew up the Irish Constitution, they will reject totalitarian rule by the minority Marxist conspirators.

If consitutionally binding referenda had been held throughout the Europe, the results would have been the same and the ruling EUSSR
trough-snuffling elites could have ended up being put on trial for treason. As it is, they will be fuming over the Irish result and planning how to either reverse or
    circumvent it.

So what will the EUSSR elites and their NWO masters do now? Will they single out the Irish for further withdrawal of money for
financing credit, now being called the “credit crunch” and, in fact, a repeat of the tactic used to bring about the 1929 Wall Street crash which enabled them to buy up vast swathes of US industrial infrastructure for peanuts?

Will they try to further restrict oil and food supplies to the island of Ireland by jacking up the prices, as they are doing world-wide at the moment? We shall see. They may end up shooting themselves in the foot with this because hungry people become angry people.

Because they are a minority, they dare not attempt to use force.
Romanian dictator Nicolai Ceausescu tried that and look at how the Romanian people dealt with him!

We should all take courage from the Irish example. It shows that
while the Marxists are lethally poisonous they are nonetheless a small minority, obliged to implement their murderous plan by stealth. If the Irish people can see through them and defeat them, so too can the rest of the peoples of Western Europe.

In Britain, it may take widespread nomelessness and hunger to awaken the still-sleepwalking populace.
When that happens, the BNP will be here to reconstruct our country.
The Westminster quislings had better run for their lives.

  42. The Irish have given us the ultimate answer to solving the problems heaped upon us by the Lib/Lab/Con alliance and their puppet masters in the last few decades. It can be summed up in two words; which are “people power”
We are being manipulated and controlled by a tiny elite who arrange matters for their own benefit and not for the benefit of the indigenous majority. The one thing this elite are terrified of is people power as they know a homogeneous people speaking with one voice cannot be ignored. Hence the mass immigration of recent decades which was a deliberate act of divide and rule.
People are beginning to wake up to the treachery that has been perpetrated upon them but the indigenous majority have to wake up in far greater numbers and far more quickly.
The EU rules are clear. If one country rejects the EU Constitution/Lisbon Treaty then the other twenty six countries cannot continue the process of ratifying it. If this tiny elite insist on flying in the face of democracy then “people power” must roar with one voice. If it does then this tiny elite will rapidly bow to them.

    Posted by laserman | June 14, 2008, 8:39 pm
  43. Is this a case of more by Irish luck than judgement? Nobody seems to have been able to read the Lisbon Treaty or have any idea of what it really says. Is that the whole point? How on earth could anyone challenge something that might easily be made out to mean anything? Perhaps the inscrutable language of the document is some form of bureaucratic Orwellian EUspeak meant to preclude any challenge once firmly cemented into place. As usual, the Irish have done the right thing by instinct.
