The 20th May issue of ‘The Times’ had a pull-out called ‘Public Agenda’. It carried a column entitled ‘Public Opinion’, and this week’s musing was by a chap called Parmjit Dhanda who, apparently, is the Fire Minister (another non-job created by Gordon Brown for his cronies, no doubt). I should point out that, as the author is at pains to state near the end of the piece, what you are about to read has nothing to do with political correctness: remember, the following has nothing to do with political correctness - most important!
“IF I WAS trapped in a burning building I would not care who pulled me out just as long as they were good at their job. So diversity in the Fire Service doesn’t matter, right? Wrong. Independent research shows that fire services that reflect their local population can help to save lives. Higher levels of trust and better connections with the community reduce the numbers of fires and raise awareness of fire safety.
People become firefighters because they want a rewarding career and to save lives. But there are too few women or people from minority ethnic backgrounds in the service, just over 3 per cent. Compare that with the police, where one in 20 (5%) is from a minority background and more than one in five are women. The Fire Service is missing out on a huge resource of talent, skills and potential. The Audit Commission criticised its lack of diversity earlier this year because it hampers efforts to reach and educate different communities about fire risk.
Of course, there are individual success stories, like Lucy Phillips, the deputy chief fire officer at Hereford and Worcester, or Rabinder Dhami, community fire safety team leader at Shropshire. They are powerful and inspiring role models, but we need to use the benefit of their experience to attract others to the service. That is why I am setting out radical new measures to change the face of the Fire Service within five years. With tough new recruitment targets, we can make the service properly represent 21st-century society.
All fire services must make sure that by 2013, the number of minority ethnic recruits reflects the local working population. This will mean that almost a third of new recruits in London, for example, will be from minority ethnic backgrounds. The number of women must also increase five fold, so that at least 15 per cent of recruits are women. Two million pounds is available for those that go the extra mile and aim for at least 18 per cent of new firefighters to be women, and for minority ethnic recruitment to exceed the local working population by between 2 per cent and 5 per cent. I want fire chiefs to make a public commitment to equality and diversity by choosing these targets and applying for the cash.
Each service will set out an annual action plan with practical steps to improve recruitment. No force that lags behind will be able to achieve an excellent performance rating.
It can be done. A recent advertising campaign aimed at young women attracted more than 2,500 inquiries from potential applicants. Applications to the London Fire Service more than doubled as a result.
We can attract people by shaping the service so that recruits feel valued and respected. That means making sure that problems such as bullying and discrimination are dealt with quickly, fairly and openly, communicating via advertising that directly reaches women, and outreach and mentoring programmes so that people understand what the fire service is all about.
This is not about political correctness. It’s about promoting opportunity and making sure that skilled people in our communities can find a fulfilling career in the Fire Service, regardless of their background This will ensure that the service better represents the communities it serves and enhances protection for all. The challenge now is for fire services to get out there, find and recruit them. It might be radical, but it’s the right thing to do.”
So there you have it - nothing to do with political correctness! So, if not about political correctness - then what? Well, for a start the author is under the impression that our BME population, and all of our female population, do not understand the danger of fire! They will, presumably, happily sit in an inferno and burn to death because they haven’t had anyone tell them in their native tongue of the dangers.
He also states that ‘outreach’ and ‘mentoring’ programmes are needed so that people understand what the fire service is all about. This is obviously important as most women and ethnic minorities think that the fire service is there to mend shoes or paint and decorate houses!
Equally important, according to the author, is that a measure of a brigades’ ‘excellent performance rating’ must be judged on how many ethnics and women it recruits, and not by how many lives it saves. So important is this that an extra £2 million is up for grabs, but only for those brigades which meet recruitment targets. In other words, until the all targets are met our fire services will continue to operate on a shoe-string, but, as soon as they have recruited enough BMEs and women, the government will suddenly come up with the funding for them to operate properly.
By the by, for ‘independent research’ read: the findings of a quasi-government think-tank created to reinforce and ‘back up’ govt. policy direction.
Although I really haven’t got a clue what this man is going on about, I do thank God that at least it’s got nothing to do with political correctness - Heaven forbid!
An afterthought: We assume the quotas mentioned above are based on the 2001 Census. Revised quotas, based on current population studies, would presumably result in the fire service having ethnic “minority” majorities in places such as Slough and Leicester and across wide swathes of London!

Whenever I see the word “diversity”, I cringe. This is NewLab/Common Purpose hypocrisy and doublethink newspeak at its very worst. These people do not want diversity, they want conformity which is why they are so keen on political correctness.

I remember having a conversation years ago with Trevor Phillips (for it was he) about local government officers reflecting the ethnic make-up of the community in which they worked. I pointed out to him that, if my office was representative (it was), most officers did not live in the borough in which they worked, but commuted some distance to come to work. The expression on his face led me to conclude that our Trev hadn’t even thought about that possibility. But do these multiculturist fantasists ever think about the real world which the rest of us live in? Female fire-fighters? Women do not have the body strength of men. Oops! Sorry - reality crept in there for a moment.

Does this mean that areas like mine which are 99.9% white should only accept white firemen, policemen, doctors etc as they “relate” best to our community ?
Will they have to ask the ethnicity of the poor people caught in emergencies before they can dispatch the “right kind” of fireperson ?

My local council follows a similar line - they call them ‘positive action trainees’. But one thing always puzzles me, there are plenty of positive action trainees (ie ethnic minorities - predominantly Muslim) for the nice cushy desk-bound jobs where ethnics are already over-represented, but curiously there are no positive action trainees emptying the bins. I wonder why that is? Something to do with Muslims not being able to collect the Kaffir’s rubbish because it’s against their religion?
I often think that the heroes who fought in the 2 world wars had their guns pointing the wrong way.
All this crap comes from ‘Champagne Socalists’ who have as much in common with reality as a lunatic in an asylum. A fire service to reflect the community.
After a look at http://www.statistics.gov I note that:- about 1 in 6 is over 65; about 1 in 5 under 20; ‘muslims have the youngest age profile’; and 1 in 20 was off work at least one day in the preceding week.
Also
nearly one in five people of working age in private households had a long-term disability. Te statistics don’t for some reason give the proportion of the population who aren’t fluent in English - try searching for it on their site.
May I suggest the following representative fire fighting crew of say 15 people:
-Two over-65
-Three under twenty
-Three long term disabled
-1 working a 4 day week.
-6 to drive appliances, process radio/phone messages, enter buildings, use high pressure hoses, and perform demolitions when needed.
Looking at current demographics this might include:
A non-English speaking Moslem aged 5; a ten year old English youth ignored by the system, who would throw stones; and a teenage girl doing work experience.
Plus: a seventy-year old ex-teacher, and an eighty year old ex-soldier.
Someone deaf, to answer the phone; someone with RSI to take messages; and an ME victim to make urgent calls.
This perhaps leaves out the differently-mentally-abled. I’d guess at present persons obsessed with fire are discriminated against. Therefore an arsonist should accompany each crew, along with his/her social worker, to encourage said person to throw petrol on flames.
Finally the crew could be completed with a duty solicitor in case of complaints of negligence.
We are very lucky to have the freedom to air our views and opinions on the BNP and other web sites, to think that no one dare to speak out, for the last thirty odd years, while our freedom of speech was taken away from us under the oppressive Race Laws. The Police and Judiciary have been locking up British People, gagging, and making an example of them, for any minor trivial incident that they could use as a big stick to scare anyone brave enough to challenge the evil terror tactics, the British Government have been forcing us to endure, while we watch our Country being colonised by wave after wave of immigrants from all over the World. I have an uneasy feeling about their motives for allowing us this recent freedom.

As regards your thesis, with luck in a fairly civilised society military wings may not be needed; the suffragettes, an often-quoted example, got the vote, though they also had mild violence such as dropping burning things in post-boxes. India got independence without violence (as far as I know) - the violence was internal and I now feel inclined to blame the Muslims for it. The other way round - the ANC had a violent wing, and the result is not exactly freedom for blacks in south Africa. I doubt if ‘the Stern Gang’ had much to do with liberation - ‘Jews’ had huge resources and their main activity was terrorism against the established populations in the area they imagined was their homeland. Anyway, I hope you’re wrong; but you may not be.
As someone who applied to one of the emergency services, and went through the whole process including a very tough fitness test, and passed, because if you don’t pass you MUST retake it or forget about joining, only to find out at one of the first training days that the only Asian on the course at the same time as me didn’t pass the fitness and still got in, now who would you rather have come to your aid–someone who can do the job, or someone who would struggle fitness wise? It’s not about skin colour, it’s about changing the rules to suit. Would they change them for me? I very much doubt it.

What if, as past trends seem to indicate, they cannot find sufficient ‘minority’ candidates to fill these positions? largely because so few of them want to work at all let alone do a dangerous highly skilled job like fire fighting.
Presumably then, they are going to drag them kicking and screaming to these new jobs whether they want them or not. Or will we just see as per usual, another understaffed inordinately expensive moribund public service?.
What about discrimination on the grounds of eye colour? If we force brigades to take on more people from ethnic minorities, it’ll invariably mean more people with brown eyes. This isn’t political correctness, it’s rampant discrimination against the blue, green and grey-eyed community. And don’t get me started on the much-maligned ginger caucus.
This idiot has clearly never worn a fire service uniform. For starters, whenever I put one on I’d find my skin would be pretty black after 30 minutes anyway. Stick breathing apparatus, a chemical protection suit and the anti-flash gear on and there’s not a bit of skin left visible anyway. That’s actually the idea, exposed skin and fire don’t get on very well together.
My experience of firefighters from ethnic minorities is pretty limited - we occasionally had black firefighters assigned to our watch, but I never saw an Asian firefighter in my life. Most Asian kids I spoke to didn’t want to be firefighters, they had other interests and wanted to pursue them. Fair enough if you ask me.
It isn’t political correctness that Parmjit is proposing, it’s out and out racism. Discriminating against brigades who don’t have enough ethnic minority firefighters and rewarding those who do is abhorrent in a free and fair society based on free market economic principles.
Still, let’s wait for the day when Parmjit wraps his car around a tree or has a chip-pan fire in his taxpayer-subsidised house. It’ll be interesting to see if he is willing to wait for the local fire brigade to recruit the right kind of firefighter when his life is on the line.
It’s interesting that the Fire Service, unlike the Police, does not reward its personnel with power over others; they truly are still servants of the public inasmuch as they save our lives and property at risk of their own without being able to shove us around the rest of the time. Is this too much like putting yourself in harm’s way for the sake of the worthless kaffir or whitey to make it an attractive proposition for immigrants? Otherwise, you can bet your bottom dollar they’d be in there like salamanders up a fire hose.
