Breaking News . . . . MPs lose High Court challenge over disclosure of expenses

It has just been announced (09:45) that the House of Commons has lost its High Court battle over the Information Tribunal’s decision to force disclosure of MPs’ expenses.

As has been previously reported the Commons challenged the Tribunal’s “unlawfully intrusive” demand that a detailed breakdown of MPs second home allowances must be provided.

The Commons also attempted to overturn the Tribunal’s decision that MPs’ addresses should be disclosed on “security” grounds.

The question now is - will “Honourable Members”, desperate to cover their tracks, seek to appeal the decision or, dare we suggest slightly tongue-in-cheek, take it to The Lords or the European Court – using OUR tax money to pay THEIR legal costs of course ?

More on this story later today.

  2. I don’t think it is tongue in cheek. I believe that they will try to get the decision overturned because they, in their own minds, feel that it is their right.

  5. One of the main justifications they give us for CCTV, ID Cards, Biometric profiles etc etc etc, is that if we have nothing to hide then we have nothing to fear!

It seems to me, judging by the sheer desperation of MP’s attempts to hide their allowance information, is that they have an awful lot to fear!

  8. Politicians have treated the people with total disrespect. We the people pay for theses expenses and we the people want to know what our money is being spent on. The arrogance of a politician beggars belief and how dare they consider appealing this ruling. I despise them all.

  9. Offtopic, but this is some of the worst reporting I have ever seen!

  10. They are so funny …… I mean this in a sarcastic manner obviously …… They are like panicking rats on a sinking ship.

I bet that they wish they had been a bit fairer in the way they deal with your average tax payer now … mind you, they have helped certain parts of the tax paying public abuse the system for so long, that they probably thought that no-one would get suspicious of themselves…………..

I am so glad that the only Political Party I have ever joined, subscribed to or made donantions to is this wonderful party that every other party is scared and jealous of, because they are the only ones to attract the true British Working Class people … that is of course the marvellous BNP….

  11. Are we witnessing a return to some kind of normality? Have we got COMMON PURPOSE on the run? Is this good?

    Yes, yes and yes.

    Posted by apendragon | May 16, 2008, 10:48 am
  12. I think we should not consider it returning to normality and having Common Purpose on the run until we the BNP are in power, where the country is actually run with its own people in mind.

  15. Ian Sharman - off topic - as I understand it, people practised in the legal system make up all sorts of lies, and/or refuse to answer; possibly the report is exactly what happened at the court. By the way has it occurred to you that under Sharia law a woman’s evidence is only worth half of a man’s; and perhaps this has something to do with the woman who allegedly removed or hid the knife not being called as a witness? I wonder if they’ll use this as a reason not to call such people.

  16. Liverpool Lad: Wise words. However, there do seem to be signs of recent decisions/media reporting which actually include some sanity in the equation.

Keep smacking faces with those wet flannels, it’s working. All the best.

  17. What have these fat pigs got to hide? All civil servants must keep their expenses for 3 years. When you look at most M.P.s, ERIC PICKLES springs to mind with his fat bloated body, along with his chin that a pelican would be proud of–to think us mugs are paying for it!

  18. I wonder if any of these unscrupulous despicable individuals have kept the perk of a second home secret from their wives/partners at home and used them as illicit sordid dens for sexual gratification without their families knowing……… I BET NEXT WEEK’S WAGES SOME OF THEM HAVE…… Dave

  19. HA HA HA! Let’s just wait for the lists to appear: Twelve blow up dolls, five of them black. Twenty lots of services from homosexual rent boys, 50 cases of the finest brandy–The list will go on and on.

  20. RW ………. your observation that a woman’s evidence is only worth half that of a man’s under Sharia law may very well be true …… but for one thing!

Sharia Law does not exist in this country and has no standing in a criminal court of this country…. So this cannot and should not be allowed to be used as an excuse for calling a Muslim woman to the stand of a murder trial…

  24. Brilliant! Now lets see them launch the inevitable appeal. One by one, the nails are being hammered into the coffin of Westminster’s corruption and treachery.
A while ago I emailed Eric Pickles, MP, with regard to the story of his advice to the Conservative Party on how to deal with the BNP. I have received no reply.
I also emailed that nasty piece of work, Hazel Blears, regarding the monitoring of “hotspots” and of people perceived to be a threat to “community cohesion”, through setting up a system of spies and informers; I have received no reply.
Despite the Lisbon Treaty (come to our rescue, Ireland, on June 12th!), I still believe the BNP shall lead Britain and true Britons to freedom; on that day, these wicked people, stuffed so full of a sense of entitlement they think they are literally unaccountable to the electorate, will be soiling their sties in terror. For they must know we are going to come after them, and hold them accountable, and punish them for what they are doing to our Land.

  25. Every now and then I may be convinced that the judiciary are indeed independant. Either that or the judges are old ready to retire on hansome pensions. No on further thought the second option seems the more likely of the two!!

  26. Liverpool Lad (May 16, 11.45) of course I agree. BUT what about the Muslim woman juror listening to music on her earphone? What about Halal meat, presumably illegal? What about selective policing of demonstrations? What about separate Muslim schools? What about insults and abuse in languages the police don’t know? What about underage girls? What about laws on car licensing, shop opening hours, health and safety…? Hospital rules on visiting? Toilet arrangements? — There are endless such examples and I would not, in the slightest, be surprised if some excuse were found not to call the knife removing woman. (NB Bertie Bert however seems to have gone through the Times piece picking up omitted bits).

  27. On the subject of independence of our judiciary, I found a piece in the Daily Mail online on a Judge, Gerald Butler, who says C Bliar ‘demeans the legal profession’. He thinks judges should retire before telling what may be the truth. The emails that follow suggests there’s a little scepticism about the legal system:

How can a mere grubby, money-grabbing person like Blair/Booth make the image of the legal profession any worse?

“Demean the legal profession”? Oh my giddy aunt! Is this fellow serious? The legal profession is itself the most avaricious, unprincipled and self serving organisation and Ms. Blair is merely one of its members.

The legal profession has no soul or dignity and is only interested in money. You only need to look at the story of the lawyer trying to free the Yorkshire Ripper.

[Incidentally her book is already being sold at half price. It's being serialised in the Sun, The Times, and Woman's Hour! I believe the Beeb serialised Blair; I don't think they publicised their,or our, payments.]

-Sorry this is off topic from expenses. The facts that NuLab’s cash-for-honours, and loans-aren’t-donations were unearthed must surely be positive signs.

    -

All ok, thanks, but please everyone, try to stay on-topic ;-) - Ed

  28. More cautiously optimistic news to add to the recent arrests of Lee Jasper’s cronies. I’m hoping the latter will also implicate the abominable Red Ken Deathstone and others higher up the ladder. There may be some squirming in the House of Sleaze today, at least I certainly hope so. Let’s hope this momentum continues and that it doesn’t result in a whitewash, or derisory sentences for a few small fry.

  29. I think when the expenses finally come out, there are going to be loads of red faces, and resignations demanded.

I was thinking how all the main parties are stifled in any debate unless it conforms to the politically correct line.
What politician would risk a well paid, good perks, good pension, if he rocks the boat telling the truth, or speaking out for the good of the country, if it means loosing his job.

Imagine the Conservatives being in power after the next general election , and the BNP in opposition.
now that would breath fresh air into politics.

    Better still a BNP government.

    -

Beyond their expenses etc., which have already been well reported here and in certain sections of media, we wonder what other little secrets there might be, and whether this is what they’re really alarmed about. - Ed

  33. I can already hear the unmistakeable sound of clenched bums gripping seats as they strain their puny brain cell trying to think up excuses. This is yet another sign that the BNP message is getting through.Everyone is scared of getting “tarred with the same brush”.All power to the partys drive towards truth!!

  34. On the subject of Expenses,

We have seen interviews where one Minister after another has told us how we must tighten our belts, in view of the present Economic Climate, followed by the bit yes we are all suffering, at which point it would be expediant for the interviewer to mention the subject of MP’s Expenses; but this never happens does it,but now:-
The Chickens Have Come Home To Roost, & I look forward to the day when these Marxist Parasites are forced Leave the Sinking Ship of this Gravy Train and have only their basic MP’s salary to live on.

Perhaps then experiencing some slight restraint might give them an appreciation of what it’s like for normal people.

Whilst not yet a pensioner, as we all know they are generally the hardest hit, in times of Economic Restraint, and I am surprised considering the number there are that they are not more of a POWER LOBBY.

I AM SURE THAT THEY COULD GIVE A POWERFULL MESSAGE IF SO ORGANISED.
    DON’T YOU?

  37. So MPs are emulating the behaviour of every wrongdoer since time immemorial - when caught out they flip over into either cry-baby mode and make excuse after excuse for bad behaviour, or use the “justice” system to appeal and appeal and appeal until they get their own way. This time the justice system has for once made a just and correct decision. In a democracy MPs are accountable to the people. ALL expenses, should be fully broken down and published for all to see. If they have nothing to hide there’s no problem is there? I seem to remember that argument over CCTV, ID cards and other covert surveillance the government uses over us. Now it’s payback time.
