Sandwell: More of a level playingfield for the BNP this year

LAST April, the borough of Sandwell in the West Midlands was swamped by trade union and Labour Party activists in the biggest anti-BNP campaign Britain had ever seen. The TUC claimed that on one Saturday alone there were more than 3,000 people out on the streets delivering anti-BNP and Labour Party leaflets.

On top of this campaign, the BBC focussed on Sandwell in the run-up to polling day as a borough where the BNP could challenge Labour and the reports which went out on the Corporation’s main news bulletins contained all the usual anti-British National Party bias.

So it was hardly surprising that on polling day, Sandwell was one of the few boroughs in the country where the Labour Party vote actually went up which enabled it to see off any challenge from the BNP. Our votes that day were a mixed bag. We lost ground in wards where we had won before due to the sheer intensity of the campaign against us, we held our own in the wards where we weren’t seen as so much of a threat to Labour and did well in wards that we were contesting for the first time.

This April, so far, the TUC is struggling to motivate its members to come out and campaign in Sandwell. Local Labour Party activists are demoralised by Gordon Brown’s inept leadership and the campaign in support of it candidates this time around is a pale shadow of the one 12 months ago. And just as important, the BBC no longer sees the borough as such fertile ground for the BNP, so the media spotlight won’t be on Sandwell this year.

On paper, it looks as though the British National Party should be able to improve on its 2007 votes, while Labour could see a massive drop in its support. But things are seldom so straightforward in politics. The local BNP has had its troubles too over the past 12 months, losing two of its four Sandwell councillors. One was sacked for a series of ridiculous speeches on 9/11 made at local branch meetings, while the other, who was working away from home, missed one too many council meetings and lost his seat.

But things have improved in recent months and Sandwell BNP have been able field 12 candidates for May 1st and there are some interesting contests in store. In Friar Park for instance, last May the BNP came from nowhere to poll 868 votes and take second place just 300 votes behind Labour, while in Hately Heath the BNP vote actually went up, despite the onslaught, leaving us as clear challengers to Labour albeit with a significant majority to overcome.

In both Great Bridge and Prince’s End, the British National Party have won before, so could do so again, while if Tipton Green returns to its 2006 voting pattern it could provide the BNP with its best opportunity to increase its representation on the council.

As May 2007 could have provided a ‘rouge’ year of election results, I’ve included the May 2006 returns as well to provide a little more balance.

  1. Seen so baldly, the figures show how much every individual vote counts at this level. However, it seems to me that public opinion in favour of pro- British pride has grown recently and even become more acceptable in the hitherto deaf, dumb and blind media. The omens look good and I wish all BNP candidates the best of British in every way.

  2. Do BNP Councillors receive any sort of training to equip them for the job or is it just on the job training?

We need the best people for this very important job as it’s the interface between the BNP and the public.

A comprehensive training program is in place for all candidates. - Ed

  4. I see on the RMT Union website that the RMT are looking for volunteers to hand out anti-BNP eaflets on all London stations on 29th March. These lot adopt a tag line of ‘hope not hate’ talk about Orwellian Britain! I don’t hate anyone but they hate us… should their tag-line actually read ‘hate not hope?

  5. Good luck to all the BNP Candidates standing in the May 1st local elections. Just to cheer a few people up, I came across this video clip from a couple of years ago just before the local elections showing Nick Griffin being interviewed on SKY NEWS. Take a good look at the public’s voting response at the end of the interview when asked “do the BNP have a place in British Politics” The result was a massive 85% of the people voting YES. It just goes to show that given enough media exposure, the Great British Public would seriously listen to what the BNP have to offer. The future may not be so gloomy after all!

  6. 3000 labour and trade union activists in Sandwell last year. I bet they were all bussed in from the four corners of the globe. This time round the unions know that many of their members are going to vote BNP. They have barely two weeks to launch a major offensive against us. I know labour activists are at an all time low, and morale is rock bottom, while ours is sky high. They have all resigned to the fact that May 2nd headlines in the worlds media will be about the massive BNP breakthrough in British politics. GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

  7. I believe we should all have more faith…We are trying to change 100/150 years of voting patterns, and what has been achieved isn’t far short of a miracle. The BNP are taking on not just “established” political parties, but also the insidious institutions of Unions media and the Common Purpose brigade, who all have a left- wing/Marxist/One World agenda..Tremendous strides have been made over the last ten years. TREMENDOUS! But this was never going to be easy people. LabLibCons can see their dreams collapsing around about their ears, they can feel just as I can, the unrest on the streets. The people are waking up to what’s being done to our people and Nation, and they are NOT happy bunnies.. Keep the faith my band of brothers and sisters as the most insignificant instance can change things significantly.. Good luck to BNP candidates everywhere! And for me…come on Birmingham! vote BNP

  8. In reference to an article that purportedly digs the dirt on the BNP’s GLA candidates, the two comments I quote here are a good indication of the desperation of the anti-BNP bunch.

“There ain’t much mud in that piece and I doubt whether any of it will stick. Let’s hope that we’ve got a silver bullet and are saving it for nearing polling day because G’s effort isn’t going to put the fascists in much of a sweat or lose them many votes.”

    And in reply;

“I’m sure there will be. Anyway, there’s a lot to be said for getting people to laugh at the BNP - the propaganda value of laughing at the enemy is high.”

    Hmmm.

  9. It just does not seem fair that the three traitor parties are shoved in our faces in the press, and on TV at every opportunity. The honourable party the BNP are starved of their fair share of publicity for telling the truth, and caring about the British race of people. When victory does come, and it will, I hope that we can remember some of these people, and give them a taste of the same unfair treatment, that they are good at dishing out.

  11. Catmar, I’m married to a BNP councillor, she is in actual fact the first female BNP councillor in Leicestershire. Cathy is very intelligent with a keen eye for detail, she has had comprehensive and ongoing training courtesy of the council. I would further add that ALL councillors receive the same training. She thoroughly enjoys her job and has been well received by everyone - take a look at her web page!! Cathy decided to keep her maiden name as we thought it more “catchy” http://www.charnwood.gov.uk/democracy/catherineannduffy.html

  12. Sandwell is NW of Brum. Certainly there are some odd things here: the very first ward listed had a huge drop in votes from 06 to 07; so did Karen Parkes ward, but some went up. Most were about the same. RedWhiteanBlue — yep, I agree as to change in deeply entrenched patterns. Mr Wingfield — I googled on BNP Sandwell 9/11 and found someone I hadn’t heard of, called Simon Smith, and also found an online blog of his; he’s slightly nasty about Nick Griffin, but in my view he’s right about 9/11. However, obviously it’s uphill all the way and trying to change peoples’ minds about yet another controversy perhaps is too much. But I hope the BNP can keep an open mind on conspiracies in addition to Common Purpose and Islam. Anyway good luck to everyone.

  13. One only need see the latest attack on everything we Britons hold dear. I am speaking as a Scotsman here and one who wholeheartedly believes the BNP is the last stand of democracy. The attack I speak of is from what is becoming the greatest traitor this country has known in my lifetime. The name of this detestable scum is Livingstone. I cannot even bring myself to say his first name. When you read the way he has secured the votes of thousands of our great enrichment friends by his handouts of our money, I feel any British-born person must, as I do, believe democracy is now all but dead. If this latest revelation is not the awakening of Britons, my vote won’t count and we have really died as a nation. Please, PLEASE wake up and see what our future holds for us if this lying scum Livingstone gets enough of these so-gullible visitors to our shores on his side. Truly disgusting.

  14. A message to all the voters who allowed liblabcon liars to influence the way they voted: please cast your mind back to all the false promises they make whenever election time comes around. The most enormous act of treachery is, of course, the promise of a referendum which they never, ever, intended to honour. I use the word “honour” guardedly because no traitor ever knew the meaning of the word! So please, don’t fall for the same repeated lying speeches with which these “dishonourable” villains will continue to bombard us. They really do consider the British public to be gullible, easily-manipulated fools who fall for the same old lies time and time again. How about showing these traitors that at long last we have seen through their veneer of “honesty” and would not wish their brand of government on our worst enemies. I personally would sooner take arsenic than vote for anyone other than the BNP. They are the only party to speak the truth, whatever the reaction of the rest of the liars out there. Vote BNP!!!

  15. Wake up sandwell! May the 1st vote BNP.
Labour in Sandwell have said next years St Georges Day parade will be scrapped because not enough ethnic minority’s are joining in.
They say the BNP are making it their day.
But it’s Saint George of England!
The loony Sandwell labour gang are running scared.
    May 1st - vote BNP!
