“STOKE TURNS TO THE BNP” was the front page headline in Freedom, the newspaper of the British National Party, for its November 2002 issue. The report beneath it was on the election for the Mayor of Stoke where BNP candidate Steve Batkin had stunned the political pundits by coming third and beating both the Tory and Lib-Dem candidates in the first round of voting.
The initial result that day was:
George Stevenson (Lab) 9,752
Mike Wolfe (Ind) 9,356
Steve Batkin (BNP) 8,213
Roger Ibbs (Con) 4,417
Geoffrey Snow (Ind) 3,975
Fred Morrow (Lib-Dem) 2,408
BNP Percentage: 19%
A few months later Steve Batkin went on to become the first BNP councillor in the city winning Longton North and now, as the Party prepared for the all-important elections three weeks today, it has six BNP councillors and is looking to increase that tally.
The target in Stoke is three new councillors in the three wards where the BNP topped the poll last May. It is a tall order but the BNP group on the council have performed well and are popular with their constituents so there is every reason to believe that with good campaigns these three wards can provide BNP victories once again.
In May 2007 in Abbey Green, Ellie Walker held off strong challenges from both Labour and the Tories. She had a majority of just 36, and 38 respectively and Melanie Baddeley will have to pull out all the stops to maintain that advantage with a Lab/Lib-Dem pack resulting in the withdrawal of Nick Clegg’s man.
In Bentilee & Townsend, Steve Batkin will be hoping to return to the council after being beaten by a massive Labour campaign in Longton North last year. David Marfleet won this seat with a 68 vote majority and with an Independent providing the only real opposition, Steve must have the best chance of any of the BNP candidates of being victorious.
The third target seat is Weston & Meir which Michael Coleman won last year with a slender 13 vote majority over the Tories. It will provide the BNP with its sternest test as the Tories have flooded the ward with campaigners desperate to rest it away from us. Anthony Tabbinor’s job won’t be made any easier by the sudden intervention of an Independent candidate, a phenomenon which seems to happen with surprising regularity in BNP marginal wards.
All in all the British National Party is contesting ten seats in Stoke and other wards to watch out for are Longton North where Pauline Smith is seeking to recapture the seat lost last year. Labour beat the BNP by just 45 votes with both candidates polling over 1,400 votes, an incredible achievement. Labour admitting spending a ’small fortune’ in their effort to unseat Steve Batkin and might not have such resources available to them this time. Lynne Pond in neighbouring Longton South might also fancy her chances. labour here have a 500 plus majority, but the BNP polled over 1,000 votes last year and that significant support could be built on to narrow the gap.
Back in November 2002 after the mayoral election, Mike Temple, a lecturer in politics at Staffordshire University told the Stoke Sentinel newspaper:
“The BNP have shown that they have a great deal of potential support in the city. God knows what would happen if they got themselves properly organised.”
Nearly six years down the line that improved organisation is gradually taking shape.

Fantastic News. At this rate my children might even have a future in this hellhole.
Steve Batkin deserves some recognition.
I can remember for years he was the lone voice candidate.
Bet he’s loving the moral support and proper organisation now.
Good luck everyone.
Stoke is the place to put the BNP firmly on the map, the corrupt politicians have had it all their own way for too long. What we need is a good money raising campaign to keep up the momentum. Alby has built a strong team, they all deserve a lot of credit. A good result in Stoke would be good for those honest hardworking people who have been taken for granted for too long. Good luck to you all.
That lovely steamroller is finally starting to pick up speed and no one will be able to stop the BNP, not even home-cheating ballot papers,{nu lab Muslim lovers},i totally wish with all my heart these BNP candidates take Stoke by storm–all the best of British to you. VOTE BNP! A MESSAGE TO ALL HARD-WORKING POTTERY FOLK, YOUR AREA HAS BEEN SLAUGHTERED BY LAB, TORY, CHEAP CHINA IMPORTS. IT’S TIME FOR A REAL CHANGE. BRITS WHO WILL PUT BRITS FIRST SO ONCE AGAIN STOKE VOTE BNP.
Stoke has an honourable industrial history and still has interesting landscape and architectural heritage, largely 18th century and Victorian. It has problems of poverty and deserves decent treatment which the ‘Labour’ money-directed and immigrant rabble would have absolutely no interest in. Good luck BNP and let’s hope the voters go for it. I suspect they will.
NB: ’sudden intervention of an independent candidate’ — there should be a note somewhere on dirty tricks. I’d have guessed that independents are as likely to take votes from the promoted parties as much as any other; or isn’t this the case?
It would appear, from the figures given above, that it would take very little for the BNP to win all these seats. Just look at the recent results - up to 20% gains!
I hope all the good folk in Stoke are out spreading the word!
3 weeks to go - it’s like waiting for Christmas!!!
The big three PC parties can afford to spend a small fortune on leaflets. The BNP cannot. So here is a suggestion. Why not put up templates of leaflets on the BNP website, which supporters can download and printout at home and stick in the letterboxes of their neighbours. It’s just a suggestion, but every little bit counts. As my old mum used to say. ‘Take care of the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves’.

Map from GMB site [anti facist! Yes they spell it facist!! Ha, they're so god awfully stupid]
They identify five clumps of marginals, helpfully picked out in different colours, one being Stoke. (Burnley is another).
My feeling is this ’searchlight’ document will underestimate the vote. There must be many other likely seats where a swing of only 10 or 20% will bring the BNP into the fore.
If we can get 19% in the Mayoral poll in 2002, then on current trends, there should be some new BNP councillors in Stoke soon. It’s up to the people to save their own futures, so please, use your vote before everything becomes so corrupt that there is no longer such a right. It’s your town - keep it that way!
BIGGLEZ!!!
Download the Party Information Pack
http://www.bnp.org.uk/2008/02/28/party-information-pack/
it’s a zip file. Inside it somewhere is BNPBooklet.pdf, which is an Acrobat PDF file. It has about 18 full colour full page printable pages - ‘Asylum - Defusing the Time Bomb’, ‘Islamic Extremism’ … farming, pensions, etc.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the flyers which are handed out;
http://elections.bnp.org.uk/
sells them, but I assume they could be downloaded too - have a burrow around!
Good luck to all B.N.P candidates in stoke and all around the country. You are the frontline now in the new Battle of Britain. To all people who can vote I say to you do not leave it to others every vote counts. To all those who have been loyal to the old worn out parties remember this, they have abandoned you not the other way round. To them you do not count anymore. Vote for the only party that will be loyal to you and deliver a country that is fit for decent people to live in. Your children and their ofspring will thank you one day. Good luck to you all, and so to Battle.
The BNP are in a win win situation all over the Country, they only need to harvest a few votes from each of the other candidates, to ring the bell.
Things are going well, the outlook is bright, and it is only a matter of time before a BNP Government take power and save us.
Good luck for Stoke! I know I will be out helping on Saturday with leafleting. Also I just got my card through the post today, so I have a very large smile!

Well done, Karen, and welcome to our BNP Family - Ed
Great news! Well done Stoke–and I can’t help feeling that the closer this draws to Birmingham, the more hysterical the LiesLiesCons will become. Their multi-racial “dream” is in tatters! VOTE BNP!
Well done Karen I just got my card today too, so im a happy bunny, don’t forget to sign up for the members forum.
Best wishes to all in Stoke for a truly stunning victory. Vote BNP.
Best wishes to all the ‘ POTTERS ‘. The very soul & heart of Britain was produced in it’s many kilns. Many are now, sadly, defunct. Hopefully they too will rise from the ashes. The Potteries has led the World, now hopefully they and our other Great Industrial towns will lead Britain into a new age. I hope you can tie together all the thieving & lying liblabcon - tricksters with a thick stout Staffordshire Knot. And discard them with all the rest of the rubbish.
Well done Stoke, let’s have the same in Bolton this year.
Congratulations, lets hope we see this happening everywhere, especially in Birmingham and London, seeing as these cities are being devastated by immigration. if we don’t do something the London accent may sound very familiar to the american one soon. If you wondering what I meant by that, I mean how the large scale immigration to the US led to the change in their accent. apparently before they were hit by immigration they sounded British.
As an ex-Potter, I remember when Reginal Mitchell designed the Spitfire, contributing to the great success in the Battle of Britain - the First of the Few.
Perhaps it’s time for the beginning of the new “First of the Many - the BNP!
Get to it and much success in future elections.
Canuck
FANTASTIC WORK good people of Stoke on Trent!!!
Keep up the good work, you are the blueprint for the rest of the country.
Set the standard in 3 weeks time guys and others will follow all over the countrt in future polls I have NO doubt.
The average electorate just needs to know its okay to vote BNP and protect our way of life.
ALL THE BEST,
Ben, Wandsworth

The amount of work done by a relatively small number of people is amazing!
As is the reaction from people. On the council estate where I live I’ve had locals come up to me and say that I’ll be getting their vote, but out in the rural and semi-rural areas of my ward, the people of these long standing tory strongholds are coming out and telling me that I’ve got their vote as well!
Irrespective of a victory or not, something fundamental has changed in the mindset of voters, and examples of it are cropping up all over the country!
-
You are right, Craig; response to our candidates, leafleters and activists around the country is astounding!
People have woken up to the agenda of the liblabcon, and are almost clamouring for the British National Party.
Tories are coming over too. In London, Boris’s alignment with Red Ken and ‘operation black vote’ has been the last straw for them.
The change in the voters mindset isn’t a temporary thing either. It’s here to stay as the BNP is here to stay.
Good luck and best wishes, Craig. - Ed
From Wales good luck to all the Stoke candidates.
I cant wait till the 2nd of may to see the faces of the liblabcons when the results come in and of major BNP gains.
They will realise the GAME IS UP.
I think what has happened here just shows that my hypothesis on Barnbrook and the BNP being like the England Rugby Team, but actually winning, isn’t far off. It just shows how far out of touch the curent politicians are from the voters. I think this year’s round of elections is going to be like the FA Cup–a lot of upsets. Like Barnsley beating Chelsea–and yes, I do like my sport!
Good Luck and Well Done to the BNP
I hope the people of Stoke wise up and vote BNP. Such a victory will get the liblabcon traitors to realise the game is up. They have all been sussed by the Great British public and like rats deserting a sinking ship watch them run for cover (it wasn’t me guv, it was the other party) when the retribution of the electorate catches up with them
The lefties will try to do as much damage as possible before they are forced out of office, like Mugabe and other dictators they will bleat and whine and make excuses “their job isn’t finished yet” and all that crap. But it’s too late now to make amends, vote the traitors out and BNP in. Then we’ll see some positive results.
