Allowancesgate: From a journalist’s perspective

We quote from an interesting article in today’s Sunday Telegraph, written by journalist Ben Leapman:-

“Three years ago I asked the House of Commons for details of MPs’ second-home expenses under the Freedom of Information Act. The Information Commissioner ordered partial disclosure, then the Information Tribunal went further by demanding full disclosure. Last week I thought my wait was finally over.

But the deadline for the Commons to release the paperwork came and went, and the following day the Speaker, Michael Martin, and his House of Commons Commission defied the rulings and appealed to the High Court. Now, thousands more pounds of taxpayers’ money will be wasted as lawyers thrash out the argument all over again.”

“The Speaker says his objection is to the release of MPs’ home addresses. I suspect this is a convenient ruse for old-guard MPs who do not want any scrutiny of how they spend their Additional Costs Allowance (ACA), which provides them with up to £23,000 a year for rent, mortgage, furniture and groceries.”

Unfortunately we are unable to agree with the author of this article on one point – he writes: “vast majority of law-abiding MPs” – but where is the evidence to support this assertion? Surely the published figures suggest that hundreds of current and former MPs have laid claim to public money under questionable circumstances - some more so than others! Indeed, every MP representing constituencies in the South East within commuting distance of The House, professing to “need” a second-home in London, for starters!

  2. If there are any. Surely, the “vast majority of law-abiding MPs” would be shouting it from the rooftops? And if not, why not? The silence is deafening!
No, I can’t agree with the journalist, sorry, he’s just trying to deflect us from the main issues. I reckon Ben Leapman can feel on the streets what I hear everyday …………… “I’m voting BNP!”

  3. When you look at the weasels and con men who make up the vast majority of MPs, is anyone actually surprised that they are up to their necks in tax payers’ hard-earned cash? The Houses Of Parliament are now reminiscent of a gentlemens’ club with everyone on the take. The people of the British Isles need a root and branch change, and we all know what party offers that…BNP!

  4. The trouble is they have been shredding the evidence like there is no tomorrow, and even if the freedom of information campaigners (BNP) win access to yesterday’s records, finding any incriminating evidence will be like trying to find an honest politician in Parliament!

    You mean there aren’t any? I’m aghast!–Ed. ;^)

  5. This Leapman guy must be a fully paid up member of the nuj (lower case on purpose). That, my friends, throws objectivity straight out of the window.
Question: What’s the smallest book in the world? Answer: The honest Journalists Year Book.

  6. The police are turning a blind eye to all this corruption and theft; they seem to have no interest in seeing their political overlords embarrassed by the truth. Anyone else in the normal life of our country would be locked up by now. Think of the dirty deals this government and the previous ones have done, from starting wars for personal profit, to insider dealing in the property market (Blair), to cash for honours. Most politicians are shameless, but this lot are just brass-faced, doing whatever they please, and then they are all made into lords and ladies. What a joke!

  7. This gang of thieves living in the House of Plenty. Plenty of our money, that is. That’s why they are petrified-the BNP-as it heralds their demise into prison and ruination, for their criminal acts. The law must seem to be just and at this time it isn’t. BNP 4 ME.

  8. My first post on this website. As a resident of France, I think it would be quite pertinent to rename the place at Westminster, ‘THE HOUSE OF COCHONS’

  9. I think that the comment made by king weasel Ed Balls at the Tory response to the budget sums their attitude up so completely: “Who cares?” he said.

Well we care Mr. weasel. we care very much about politicians fleecing taxpayers and most of all we care about our country.

This slimeball was so afraid that his words would come back and haunt him, that he firstly denied he ever said them and had them struck from the official record and leaned on his Fleet street cronies to have the story suppressed.

It’s almost becoming like a banana republic. When these liberal facist criminals are finally kicked out of Parliment mabye Ed and his mates should make their skills and experience available to Mugabe?-
